so did you look into the 4wd drive setup from a volkswagon vanagon syncro???

Yeah right, good luck finding it. Its pretty well know in the VW circles that about the only way to get your hands on a Syncro (or its running gear) is to pry it from the cold dead hands of its owner.

And, it wont handle much more than stock power and would be rear engine.

that is true clayton it would be a good luck on getting one and if you find one it is a rarity trust me I have only seen a syncro for sale once and only once in the last 10 years that I have been looking at them lol

I got the driver's side door hinge welded in place to the frame, and some inside the door glasswork done over the last month and that is about it. I have been very busy buying the new house and preparing to move. It looks like not allot will get done in August either, just too much involved with the house. The good news is that I will now have the garage space I need to really get some progress done and done quickly. I expect that the project will really take off making up for any lost time recently.

Do you have an Aerospace or Engineering background, military experience in space-ops? We do have some slots open now for Flight Opperations Specialist (satellite pilot).

yes, i'm an AE and work in satellite flight operations at NASA goddard space flight center. PM on it's way.

Hello,

I am impressed with your creativity and productivity. I have a series of questions and I hope I am not violating etiquette in asking so many in one post. First question is: what needs to be done to remove the AWD section of the tranmission? I am interested in using a late model Subaru engine in a 914 or x 1/9 in a Rwd only setup. Can you tell me the distance from the front motor mount to the half shaft centers where they emerge from the trans, and the distance from there to the end of the trans (at the rear). More important than the dimensions (at this point) is what do you need to do to shift the subaru trans in it's new location. On a more removed note You decided to use a subaru trans, which I would think would be reliable, less expensive, and already mated to the engine. How are you going to mate that to your rear suspension? I have noticed that in the subaru 914 conversions usually the 914 trans mission is used with all of its drawbacks. I am trying to figure out if using the subaru trans is going to be much more difficult. Thank you for reading this. I look forward to any light you may be able to shed on my questions.

that using the suba the length of the tranny that projects beyond the axle output shafts. The 2WD tranny or the AWD tranny shortened by removing the AWD section barely fits, the AWD tranny would actually project beyond the rearbodywork. If one were to go with this Tcase setup it would be hanging out behind the car.

Welcome to the board!

if i were you i would start my own thread and ask the questions there...

you'd problably get more answers doing that... but i remember reading a thread about putting an sti engine into a 914... there were movies and pics... a company makes a kit for it i do believe... if you do a search on the board i'm sure you'll come up with something...

Good luck!

The Subaru tranny can be modified, saker cars in Austrailia makes a kit to remove the rear output of the tranny and make it a transaxle. However the engine MUST be ahead of the wheels due to the rotation of the shafts. If I recall correctly the engine is behind the wheels on a 914. Adapting a 914 tranny to a Subaru EJ or EG or even EA series engine is a very simple affair in terms of it fitting. However a 300~600HP STI engine is going to make scrap metal out of a stock 914 tranny. Your going to need a tranny built for that HP.

In the case of the Lambo the engine is ahead of the rear wheels meaning I can use any Subaru tranny that I want as long as it can take the HP. All I have to do is fab up mounts from the frame and bolt it in. The hard (expensive) part is having a shafts made up to mate to the Subaru output and the Corvette hubs.

I haven't seen under the lid of one in years. I bet it would work out then, the tail might be a bit longer but things should work. I have seen V6 and V8 in them so a Subaru engine which has the same HP at a fraction of the weight should fly.

I am using a EJ20/4EAT in about the same config as your Lambo might use in a street legal sandrail. I am shifting the tranny full manual without the TCU. The linkage to shift it is very simple compared to five speed manual tranny. The only problem using it in a street car is the shift is very very firm and third gear is free wheeling. That could be taken care of with a togle switch and a timer/resister on the pressure solenoid. I have posted pics in the photo gallery. If you want more info PM me your email.

Hey Sandsuby, is that a JDM twin turbo I spy in those pics? Sweet! Nice setup, looks like a screamer.

Gary

The twin turbos were scraped soon after the car was finished. The car is multi-purpose. It sees use on the street, desert and sometimes the sand.

Nicely done! What sort of engine management are you using?

I am interested in doing a paddle shifter for a 4EAT myself on another car.

And I wonder if it would be easier to set up a J/K flip flop ciruit matrix or a PLC to control it or hack the stock TCU. There are some great programmamble relays out there, we used one on a pumkin cannon to fire a second burst of air midway in the barrel after the first one fired but after the pumpkin passed that point, but not too late...

When I first put the EJ20/4EAT in I used a ECU and TCU from a EJ22 (about 115 wires to deal with). It ran but would not rev up. I decided it was in limp in mode. I don't know if the TCU would work as I never moved the car. I installed a stand alone Link ECU only seventeen wires and instant sucess. I had read someone was racing a 4EAT and shifting it full manual. I found out who it was but they would not share info about how. With a little info digging I discovered with the use of three diodes wired into the 4EAT wire connectors the tranny would stay in each gear until it was shifted again.

Hacking the TCU is beyond me but I have thought around a paddle shifter. I thought mabe a racheting device on the gear selector actuated with a two way solenoid. Just a thought.

BTW I am working on a Megasquirt n Spark for the car now........
