I have an E test coming up and wanted to know if there were any good ways to pass this thing without putting to much money in to it. Exhaust is new and all of the other general maintenance is kept up well. Any good octane boost out there. I have heard of methynol mixed with some gas. But not to sure about that one. lol.

Your turbo is fuel injected and you should pass emissions without any trouble. You'd be getting a check engine light if the emissions are far enough off to fail. Just make sure your air cleaner is new and not causing you to run too rich and make sure the catalytic converter is good and hot when you arrive at emissions; run it up and down the highway before you go.

Ya im hoping it will pass with no problem. But would the alchohol hurt anything, if I use just a little and only once. I know it makes the fuel burn longer which makes it hotter and I ahve a chance of burning up my pistons if I use too much. But what about only this time?

I used to have a gas-guzzling Dodge V8. To get through the e-test, I used to increase the idle speed as far as I dared. In my case, the V8 would fail on the idle test, and this helped get it passed. The test centre had a max limit on the idle RPM, I think that it was either 1100 or 1500 RPM. One time I was over the limit, the engine was screaming at idle; the testman let me get away with it, but warned me: 'not the next time...'

 

And one other obvious tip: make sure that the engine is good and hot before going in for the test.

another tip is a fresh oil change

 

if the oil is old and has been tainted with raw gasoline during cold weather starts

 

it can release the gas vapors which will be recycled into the intake manifold

via the PCV system

 

I have also heard of people removing the air filter element so the mixture is

not made artificially rich but a semi clogged element.

 

The EJ22 is a pretty clean burner as Josh says and if the FI ECU is not tossing it's cookies like Ed refered to,

there should be no problems

but

i went through without a cat and failed like a champ, over twice the limit. the CE light being on doesn't necessarily mean much, mine wasn't on when i had my converter off and i didn't pass. if the CE light is on, then you surely shouldn't bother trying to have it tested unless you know exactly why it's on and it's possible effects on the emissions. some states now won't even check your emissions if the CE light is on.

 

like mentoined earlier, a good running subaru should pass with no problems. good spark and fuel and you should be fine. my 200,000 + XT6 passed just fine (after i installed a cat!). make sure the car/exhaust has been driven and nice and hot when you show up. the catalyst in the converter works best when hot.
