subestyle18
I have an 83 4wd wagon and have heared that subaru used two different heads on the 83s and one is better then the other. So now im wondering how to tell what i have and if i dont have them how to tell what cars i can find them on. Assuming that they can be swaped. Thanks David
TheSubaruJunkie
There are hydrolic lifters and solid lifters. I believe the hydrolic lifters have larger valves. If you change the head, you'll need to change your pushrods as well. Not sure how to tell the diffefence between the 2. I think in 83, 4speed 4WD had solid lifters. -brian

Thanks David starting in 83 if you had a manual tranny, you still had solid lifters, but AT's came with the hydaulic lifters. there was some talk earlier that '82 may have been a mixed year for valve sizes..... I don't know for sure.... I had a 83 Brat (possibly a late '82 ) motor that had the larger valves... the heads will interchange too, as I put a solid lifter '83 head on a '86 hydro engine, using the '86 rocker assembly and push rods...
