How the heck do I put a CD player in a Brat??

Recommended Posts

Don't the metra kits come with a brat/wagon plate?

Mine came with an extra plate for what I thought were gen II cars. I gave it to Erik in tacoma for his wagon. I thought it worked for a brat as well.

I'm guessing you have a gen 2 Brat, but here's my stereo in my gen 1:

Works great, no problems in shifting.

Here's what I have behind the seats.:brow:

It was funny going in to have it installed, they had never done a brat before and said that they would "see what they could do" It turned out great though.

Come on by and look at mine; I don't have the slanted console and managed to install it; jrach also had a cool install but it was a lot of work (he swapped the heater control panel with the radio slot).

Show me some ways I can fit my CD player in a Brat. It seems however I do it, I'll have to give up the use of 1st and 3rd gear, those are my two favorite gears!!!

Pictures speak 1000 words.

Here is another slanted radio console I had. I put this one in my old '83 Wagon.

One problem i always had with my slanted consoles were the angle they keep the CD Player. With the stereo in that picture, i could hardly ever read the text on the screen. If your stereo has a contrast control then you should be able to adjust that.

With the stereo in my Brat, it stopped working after a while. Just the CD mechanism and I think it was because of the angle I had it mounted. Or maybe the fact it was a cheap stereo :)

Either way, its the only real practical way to mount a DIN size deck in any EA81.

Some owner in the past had a stereo in it, with one of those 1" adapters. All that is left now is that adapter, and I continually fight to get all the way into first gear because my gear shift hits it.

While test fitting my Pioneer deck into it, i could see it just wouldn't work, unless i was willing to just mash the face of my deck continually with the shifter.

Here's my setup in my '84 Brat:

Check out my comments since I really don't like the aftermarket face plate; ugly, but it does the job. If anyone knows of a faceplate that isn't so tall, I'd like to know about it. Check out the other two views in my photo gallery

A standard size DIN will fit in the normal console (I have one) and in the slanted one also.

So, Brian can a standard DIN sized CD player fit in the lower half of the slanted console? In your first picture it looks like the lower panel is cut for a head unit, but I figured I would ask anyway.
