Caboobaroo
Since I have been having so many problems getting the rear quarter windows for my RX, I came up with a brillant idea after a friend of mine told me about the plexi glass she used to replace a window in her Honda. It popped into my head a few days ago that since I also want to tint my windows, why not find a place that sells tinted lexan and use that instead of glass? So now I'm hunting down a place near Laramie that sells tinted lexan to use for windows. Now yes I do know that this is probably not street legal since they have to shatter certain ways BUT this is the cheapest way to do it and the easiest since there's a possiblity of there not being anymore new quarter windows and if there are, waaaaaayy too expensive. That and I have no back seat either so no problems with passengers. So hopefully tomorrow I can figure out a place that would have lexan that I can use and hopefully it won't be too expensive either. Are there any opinions on this option I have uncovered? Oh and the car is getting a full rollcage in the rear as well (I love relatives;))
Flowmastered87GL
I think you can get away with the "tint" since the windows are not on the front. I guess it varies state to state though. Alot of rally cars use lexan windows. I say go for it.
MilesFox
lexan should be break in proof imagine a thief's frustration!
Caboobaroo
well I'm not going to go with a heavy tint, just a dark enough tint to give the car a nice look to it. The main reason I thought of this was yes, to also prevent people fromt wanting to break into it or if one of my neighbors on a drunken night decide to through bottles in the direction of my car... Dr. RX
Hey Caboobaroo This is jerry, is your Rx body style like the 86 three door? If it is i have the glass just got to let me know how to remove it. Let me know Thanks JerryJerry and Caboobaroo, all 3 door glass is the same, just 86 to 93 (I think that was the last year, maybe 92). There is no difference in the glass between a 3 door RX and a GL 3 door, or any other Subaru EA82 3 door. I also have a counter weighted rear hatch with glass if anyone needs one. You need the counter weighted type for the RX with the rear spoiler.
Caboobaroo
well the reason I decided to step away from the glass windows is because its getting harder and harder to find them. Plus I can get the tint shade I want without having to spend any extra on going to a shop to get those windows tinted. Thanks for the offer Jerry but I think I'm gonna go with the lexan this time. WoodsWagon
I attempted to remove the glass from the stripped 3-door, and found the 1/4 windows were glued in solid. All I succeeeded in doing was shattering them. I still have the rear glass and door though, stored in the woods.
Sydfloyd44
If you return interest to the glass, give me a shout. Can hook you up with new glass at near wholesale price! As far as the Lexan, you are correct. It is not legal since it doesn't meet FMVSS. In reality, who is going to know? Especially if you tint it and are careful cleaning it to avoid scratching. NorthWet
I just went through an experience of trying to get a quarter window for an XT. Well, actually it was more like me watching a Board member valiantly try to remove the glass. In the process, the glass got scratched and eventually shattered. So, my choices seem to be: Shatter another couple windows before I successfully get on out, pay $230 to have it replaced with new, or go with Lexan/Acrylic. Lexan has a drawback of being very soft and easily scratched; may have to use "tear-offs" like helmet visors...
Caboobaroo
well lexan will also be a lot cheaper to get and a lot easier to get instead of glass. I was thinking about going to a glass shop to get it replaced and they told me IF they could get it, it would be in the neighborhood of about 300 bucks!?!?!?! My wallet hurt a little when I found out. I'm sure I can spray on a few coats of automotive clearcoat on them to prevent scratching. Just a few ideas though... Sydfloyd44
Did some checking today on the glass. According to our books, same glass for RX, RS, GL, Loyale and a few others, and dates shown were 86-90. Pilkington/LOF said that they could get one of them. Problem is that it would be thru Pilkington Classics which is not good for the pricing issue since it is their division that handles rare/obsolete parts. (not sure which side?) PPG has one side in Hartford, CT and the other in Richmond, VA. Pricing is the same for both and would be $60.00 plus shipping for each one. (PPG doesn't normally charge us to get it to the warehouse that services us and we don't pay delivery fees to them) These are NEW pieces of glass directly from PPG!! Weird thing is that one side is a green tint and the other is a clear. The green tint is what you have as do virtually ALL cars. The clear was the weird one?? That would be EXTREMELY rare if it is truly clear? If tinting, it wouldn't matter. Would take about 4-5 days until I had them in my hands. Just for your information. If there is any interest, we can talk further and we can MAKE SURE it is the right glass. If not, no problem!
