Eikari
Hello. I´m new here and own a Legacy ´91 2,2 with auto. There is one problem that i cant seem to fix! When i step on the brakes i hear squeal from them but if i step hard on the brakes it stops. I´ve checked all the brake pads ,they´re ok, and the brake discs are relativly new. Could it be the wheel bearing?. Another question: When i was driving couple of days ago and i´ve reached the speed of 60 miles , the steering suddenly started to vibrate excessivly. I can´t remember if the summertires were balanced before they put on this summer. What could be wrong?:-\
Setright
Have the wheels balanced before going further with that problem. The squeal: Are you certain all eight brake pads are still ok? Maybe an inside rear pad has run skew?
Legacy777
You can put some disc quieter stuff on the back of the brake pads. I'd say the noise you are hearing is pretty common. What happens is the pad vibrates with light pedal pressure, mostly due to them not fitting real tight. With the goop on the back of the pad, it helps absorb the noise from pads. Eikari
That could be it. I had some difficulties putting the brake pads on when i replaced last time. I´ll try that.
Spazz698
Doesnt subaru sell shims to put behind the brake pads on non-subie pads to relieve the squealing? My car does the same thing, only my back speakers have started to go so I can hear it again
Legacy777
You have to buy subaru pads in order to get new shims.....

Brumby Boy
Are the brake pads or rotors glazed? that could be the squeel. is the viabration only when you use the brakes or all the time if its all the time it is most likley the wheel balance if it is when you use the brakes the rotors probably need machining
Eikari
Are the brake pads or rotors glazed? that could be the squeel. is the viabration only when you use the brakes or all the time if its all the time it is most likley the wheel balance if it is when you use the brakes the rotors probably need machining The rotors are relativly new . If i step on the brakes with normal pressure they squeel. But if i step hard on the brakes the squeel stops. Could anyone show a pic of how the "Shims" look like? Setright
COuld be they are just too "clean" and need a workout. Find a quiet road and brake hard a few times. Make sure you cruise gently for a few miles afterward to cool the brakes down again.
Subaru X
lol whenever my brakes squel like that I take a trip to the car wash. Even when I use the silicone on the back of the pads I still squek. So I just pressure wash the car and make sure to get in between the spokes of the wheels to get the brakes clean. Keeps it from squelling for about a week. Which is about how often I wash my car. FlyFlicker
As SX pointed out, it could be brake dust causing this. But it is also a symptom of glazing. Repeated, light braking can gloss the rotors and pads, and this results in brake squeal. Remove the rotors and pads and "rough" them up with sand paper. If the squeal goes away - that's your problem.
