her you go ....

anybody for 14" extreme mud tires....

not sure how they'd handle the weight of a car, but for a off-road only vehicle.....

Mick,

I think someone beat you to it....

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?p=306557#post306557

I believe most of those tires are rated at about #500lbs which is about the weight of a standard ATV. Spread the weight of an ATV over four tires and the working load is not much. However, the average Subaru is around 2500lbs loaded? You'd be seriously overloading those tires if they are rated the same as other 6plys..?

Having said all that there are a bunch of ATV tires mounted on Subies. The secret is inflating the tire pressure big time more than what you would run if it were an ATV. I run 2.2 to 3.3psi in my ATV. I run 22 to 33psi in the buggy and it seems to work.

I was giving rides in the buggy for the kids at a kids parade over the 4th and my GBC Dirt Devils were pretty cruel to the lawn  I was driving on...

For what it's worth,

Glenn

I considered both of those exact tires.

I decided against the mudzilla because of the depth of the tread.

I didn't get the outlaws because of the price.

I paid $57 for the 26" GBC Dirt Devils. They have an 1 1/4" lug. Some tires have 2" now!!!

The problem with deep lugs is they give you a real bad ride until you "plain out". Once you get over 5 mph the ride is not so bad but until then you feel every lug going around on the tires.

You don't roll when you first start out, you klunk

my hatch weighed 2100 lbs, at its lightest. no way to make it any less.

thats exceding the limit of these tires.

whats that summer weigh, about 1800?

my favorite kind of tires: ones made for trucks, that are bigger than stock.

I hope were still on point with the tires...?

I built Summer bigger, faster & stronger than the plans called for.

I put rock sliders on the sides, a funky "Xterra" roof line/luggage rack.

I stretched the plans and made it a 4 seater.

What i'm really trying to justify is....Summer weighs #2000 even!

Gassed and ready to rock.

I was hoping for #1500 and I think that is possible but not with the way I built it.

The aluminum probably weighs close to #200. The plans are metric so you can't get the exact steel called for. The stuff I used is thicker than the plans called for. Any point that can touch a rock is even thicker steel!

This puts me right at the weight limit for the tires....unless I run duallys...

stock sized tires? the outlaw makes a tire in 29.5inches and 12.5 wide

Thats not what he's running however.

===================================

I thought we beat this silly ATV tire idea into the ground 3 times before? Yes I even brought it up years ago asking if it was an option. It's not an option for someone who actually drives on the pavement. It's not an option for any vehicle heavier than a hatch or justy.... I would shred and blow out one of those wussy ATV tires on my wagon; its #3800 fully loaded. Out on the rocks I would either blow one out when comming down off an obsticle or shred one up spinning it under that weight.

your loosin me here, why would you build something you cant drive on the street, that weighs as much as a stock subaru? with stock sized tires?

Now your loosing me,

Stock Subarus weigh 2400+, loaded and in the real world they weigh more than that.

Stock tires will measure out to 22.5" not 26"

I stopped at 26" for gearing, I don't drive around in 4 lo.

I built this for off-road!...Not for the street.

Weighs less and performs better than anyones stock Subaru.

Makes sence to me...it's a great toy.

like i said, my hatch weighed as much, and was throroughly offroad.

now i weigh 250 more lbs. but has twice the hp. and twice the ground clearance.

i just dont want anyone runin those atv tires on a subaru.

truck tires fit well, and last very long time, since the subarus dont weigh nearly as much as the vehicles the tires are designed for.

i like to over kill, not run on the edge of whats considered safe.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wouldn't use an ATV rim if that's what your thinking (4-137)

I looked into that but nixed the idea due to the strength of the rim.

Someone up in the northwest is running a Justy with ATV tires already but I believe they are running them on custom rims.

You could have rims made almost as cheap as you can buy a nice set of ATV rims.

...but has twice the hp. and twice the ground clearance.

160 Horse and two feet of ground clearance

That's impressive!

I think your math is a little off ;)

80hp to 150hp

6" to 12" ground clearance

Stock is 8" double would be 16"

If your doubling me you'd be needing 24"

80hp doubled would be 160 wouldn't it?

I stand by my math.

I didn't make up the double clearance double horsepower thing.

I just did the math.

To be honest not only do I find it impressive,

I find it unbelieveable!

Some how I think we've lost focus of what this thread was all about?

This thread was never about debating my Buggy VS Stripped Hatch.

I'm sure they both have a place.

Wasn't the real idea, to explore the possibility of 14 ATV tires on a subie?

It wasnt 8" off the ground when he got it; it was about 6" at best. Due to worn out suspension. I doubt his EA81 had even 80hp on a good day; prolly more than doubled with the ER27 in there. It wasnt a doubeling of OEM specifications; it was a doubeling of his hatch as it stood.

The idea of ATV tires on a Subaru has been coverd several times. It's a bad idea. It seems like a good idea at first; hell I thought it was back before I knew anything about Subarus and ATV tires. However it's been hashed over and it's simply not safe or feasible for 99% of Subaru owners.

I dunno why we are talking about either subject any longer. I'm going to go look at more WCSS7 pics :drunk:

dont make me post pics. i have 16 inches to the bottom of my unibody, at the middle of the door.

i had 150 hp when subaru made my motor. i put 2.5 inch exhaust, on a "refreshed" 2.7 with other hp mods. i would guess 160 hp is very attainable.

the ea81 came with something more like 65 hp

another funny thing... i just looked at the tires on my motorcycle. it weighs 400 lbs. the tires say 500 lb on them.

i aint runing something made for a 400 lb vehicle on a 2100 lb car! its as easy as that.

atv tires=unsafe.... but then you have to drive the thing to actualy test anything out.

put some miles on it, real offroad miles, and see how many sidewalls fail

big brown hatch- runin truck tires

98 harleydavidson-runin tires that can support a passenger car(apparently)

Put what ever tires you want? It really doesn't matter to me?

I put ATV's on mine. I'm happy with it. So are the folks at RhinoBuggy

I'll let you know when one of my 6ply sidewalls fails.

Sorry to hear you have a Harley...but that's another thread. :D
