Well, if the ignition timing is/can be set correctly, then your distributor is unlikely to be one tooth off. It can be 180 degrees off, and as long as you route the plug wires right you wouldn't know the difference.

If your timing light is broken and you don't have a replacement, I certainly would NOT be pulling the distributor and resetting it. You would have no clue where your timing was.

Did the timing look fairly steady (given any rpm fluctuation caused by your surge problem), or did it wander around? Might be worth checking at medium rpm (2k-3k).

Usually surging is a lean fuel/air ratio thing, not really a timing thing. What do the plugs look like for color? This should really be done after a run under power, (or at conditions where surge occurs), with the ignition then turned off before idle or slow-run mixture muddies the plug color.

Or you could check for vacuum leaks, whether the float is set corectly; stuff like that.

* edit - Oh, and you did check the timing with the vacuum advance hose(s) removed and plugged, right??? - end edit*

as i was looking at a few ea81 books i have i found the problem , when i cranked the engine by hand, because i wanted to mark the .8 mark with a marker so i could see it , well instead of setting it on 00 i left it on .8 and forgot all about it :banghead::slobber:

asv valves are capped off, as the hoses were meissing when jim got the brat, i capped them off with thick inner tube rubber and hose clamps, is those are the asv valves, anyway, the dookers that come out of both heads on the sides, metal pipe things that a rubber hose would fit onto, 1 inch wide approximately. capped off since they go no where! (with a weber install)

i talked to jim on the phone to explain the timing marks line uo to 0 deg to INSTALL the disty, but you use the light to SET the timning to 8 deg or 10 or whatevert you want it at

Wishing I would've had more time to spend at Jim's looking at this issue. I was down that way picking up my Grandson, and couldn't stay long.

As for the oil in the carb, it was caused by the PCV hose routing and with one hose having a kink in it. Re-routed all of that stuff, so it shoud help with the oily carb issue.

Vacuum line to Disty was hooked to manifold, swapped over to the carb port. Ignition timing was near center of the adjuster slot, (remember, no timing light), and I played with different settings to see how it ran. Turning the disty clockwise, improved running of engine, but it still wasn't right.

At idle in Neutral, if you gave it gas, it would rev up, but it stumbled alot in doing so, twisting the Disty improved this, but not greatly. The thought of the Disty being offf a tooth was just an idea, and not a determination of fact.

Why the Ac quit working is a mystery to me, as it was working but the idle-up gizmo was not fully hooked up. Bracket on throttle missing along with vacuum hose to it from solenoid on strut tower. Jim found needed items and hooked that up, after I left.

Going to see if I can free-up a day here to make the trip back down and give it a better looking over. Check ignition timing fully, check plugs, and whatnot. Engine does smoke some out of tailpipe, but that could be from the oil getting into the carb, and may clear up. I'll bring my compression tester along, do a test on that, see what's what.
