SO... Big O Tires rate their Euro Tour as a 40k mile tire and they supposedly have these great warranties blah blaH blah. I've got maybe MAYBE 25k on these tires... they are 3 of them BALD very evenly and one that has inner belts peeling off the way sun burnt skin starts to peel. It's scary. They said this is MY fault and is "mechanical" tire wear and not covered by the "warranty". They said the best they can do is pro-rate me the unused "miles" and sell me a new set of tires. IS there anything I can do or am I just F'ed??

Yes, you're F'ed. The way it's been explained to me, by the time you pay to rotate and balance every 5,000 miles or whatever your warranty required, you're better off getting brandy new tires. Try using TireRack.com. I've been satisfied with the F'ing I got from them as good as any other.

Big O offers free rotate and balance every "5000" miles. They don't keep track of rotate and balances... I generally do it every 3000 miles. I don't understand what you mean by the above statement?

Wasn't aware of your local dealer warranty and service you apparently received. If you actually did the rotations and they can't disprove the fact, then ask them exactly what "mechanical" causes are they referring to. It would seem that some sort of prorate is in order. Read their warranty and ask to speak to "corporate" if still unsatisfied.

Without seeing the tire, the one that is worn substantially on the inside is evidence of an alignment problem. That is probably the mechanical problem they are talking about. Did you get the vehicle aligned (4 wheel) when you bought the tires? Did you do an alignment since then? I am sure their recommendations is to have alignments every 12K-15K miles or so, and it may even be in their warranty agreement as a requirement.

 

These discussions are why I always get my car aligned when I purchase tires from the same place that I purchase the tires. I also make sure I get any recommended suspension work done from them, so they can't blame someone else when I have a tire wear problem.

This is the way I understand most tire warrenties work. You usually get "full coverage" in the first year or XX miles and then after that you get pro-rated credit towards another one of their tires. If the tire is warrentied to 40k, and you got 25k, then it's reasonable to offer whatever 37% of the tire cost was towards a new tire.

 

I don't think you're being f-ed... I think they are being reasonable here. Think of the absurd example of a set of tires lasting "only" 39k miles, should that buyer get a new set of tires? if all 4 tire wore out a 9k miles, then I think it would be reasonable to cover 4 new tires for free.

 

As far as tires wearing out before they claim they should-- I don't think I've ever had a tire last what the tire spec says. I think those numbers are like EPA gas mileage estimates, you COULD get 40K miles if you drive easy, no hard turns, hard braking, etc...

 

I had good experiences with Big O up until I had them mount a set of tires I ordered from tirerack. All 4 rims came back with scratches.:mad:

the way that our factory warrenty works at goodyear is that the tires are covered to meet the mileage warrenty from the factory. if they wear EVENLY (good alignment), havn't been burned off, or have a workmanship or factory defect the tires will be prorated based on mileage warrenty vs. tread depth. Get it?

 

you can also buy the road hazard which is 10% of the cost of the tire which covers the tire for the first 60% (i think) of the tires life for any fatal hazards such as a blowout, large nail in the side wall etc.
