EA82T Valve cover off and.......

Recommended Posts

PROBLEM

Hydraulic lash adjuster failed, causing the loss of tension against the rocker arm. The rocker arm then slipped off the valve end and fell into the oil return hole. Once the rocker arm was gone, the valve lash adjuster was forced out of its recess by oil pressure. It separated, with one piece also going into the oil return hole while the body remained in the head, rubbing against the cam. All three pieces were recovered.

QUESTIONS

Can a new hydraulic lash adjuster and rocker arm be installed without removing the cam? Is there enough room to install the lash adjuster in its hole, collapse it as far as it will go, then slide the rocker arm in place?

(somewhat unrelated) – Does the crankshaft have a key-way in it for the main “front engine” fan-belt pulley? The main fan-belt pulley can be turned (along with the water pump, alternator, A/C, etc) without the engine moving. I’m assuming the pulley has a key-way and that the key itself has sheared at the front of the crankshaft. Is that accurate?

No. To properly do the job, the cam case need to come off. Its a PITA to do in-car.

You might as well pull the engine and overhaul it...that way you wont have to work on it for another 50k miles (timing belt interval) after that.

As for the crank pully, there in a pin in the front tbelt sprocket that keeps the crank pully from moving and loosening the bolt. You should check to see if that is present or missing. If missing...install one.

The idea for this car as of this point is i want to put as little money in it as possible... i just want to get it running so i can see if i want to keep it and turn it into a rally car.

so! if i install the lash adjuster, by vice gripping the timing sproket in place, and loosening the cam as to slide the rocker arm in place (probably creating an oil leak) JUST TO GET IT RUNNING.... that is my plan.. if it runs awesome... awesome..

if it runs..... then it runs. then i'm going to purchase a new cam, and probably start rebuilding the engine... from the bottom up.

if it doesnt run, then i'll instead put the money into a crate engine, and keep this one for spare parts.

i just want it running, if even for a little bit... just to check out the drivetrain, and the rest of the car. IVE NEVER ACTUALLY DRIVEN IT. i purchased it, towed it home a month ago, and ive been working on it ever since, every weekend... :) I'm pretty mechanical, but never worked on an engine like this. i'm trying to keep the money low at first. :)

any clever ideas would be AWESOME

thanks!!!

Link is to electryc_monks thread where he had same thing happen. Tells how he got it back in without tearing anything apart. Didn't stay, but he did get engine to run for a while before it came back out.

Awesome. Very informative. Again, i'l keep the forum informed. It was odd to see the HLA completly in two pieces under the valve cover. Strange.

and a side note... that does PITA stand for?
