heartless
Hey all!! been a while since i have been here - working really long hours at a new job and usually just too darn tired to fire up the 'puter. Anyway, I have just recently logged a 34.7 mpg!!! the highest i had gotten before this was 31.9 - that was running the freeway at 70-75 mph, putting around 100 miles a day on. Still running about 100 miles a day, but using back roads and running around 60-65 mph. Not too shabby for a 16 yr old car with 215,000 on the clock and counting!! TahoeFerrari
Routinely get 34-36 at 70-75 on long drives with my '87 d/r 5spd spfi with 286K miles on it. Of course I have the advantage that its a lowered 3-door with a custom front spoiler!
freeldr
i average about 30-35mpg on my 85 5speed d/r CARBED wagon. no A/C:( and it still wont pass emmisions lol
Peter Grimes
I just got a '93 loyale wagon, non turbo. I didn't know what to expect mileage-wise, so I was thrilled to find 31mpg on my first assay. That was a combination 1/3 NYC streets and 2/3 highway. I have since recorded 33.5 on a trip to New Hamshire, back roads and highway, about three hundred pounds of gear plus two adults. Intermittant A/C. A/C would send the temp. needle too close to the red zone for my comfort, so we limited its use to non-highway speeds. Oh - 182k. heartless
...with a custom front spoiler! And what would it it take to get one of those??? I sort of have custom body work - if you can count the rusted out fenders and stuff as custom!! have a set of "new" fenders to go on, but really need the lower valance - or something else - to make it look decent again. Still, all in all, for a $150 beater car (bought 4 yrs ago) i cant complain one bit - been the best $150 i ever spent. Now if I could just learn to quit doing burnouts.... naw, what fun would that be????
dave valiant
I went on a 350 mile road trip today and got 29 mpg with my 87 dr 5 speed wagon with 232,000 miles on the clock.I was driving out on the prairie and fighting 20-35 mph winds.I am fairly impressed.Dave. EYE_WHY
My record with the 94 Loyale is 38.2 mpg. About 150 miles of highway driving 70-75mph. I was extremly impressed! Although it seems that the harder and harder I drive it, the better mileage it gets around the city. Can't quite figure that out, guess it just likes the high RPMs.

(shifting around 4500 instead of 3000-3500).
MilesFox
m8 88 sedan 2wd at to 4wd 5spd can go from columbus ohio to chicago illinois, or fort wayne indiana to milwaukee, wisconsin filled to the brim till it clicks and squeeze another dollar in there, i got 457 miles when i ran out of gas. keep in mind the car was loaded down with most of the stuff i own and on the top as well. meant to run out as i had a 5 gallon can full in the back the low wfuel warning lite was good for almost 100 miles
PopsicleMud
Hmmm... I just got my '92 Loyale with 145,000 miles on it a few weeks ago, and I'm not getting nearly that kind of mileage. On the night I got it, I took it on a mini-roadtrip and got about 26 MPG on purely highway driving. Since setting the timing and changing the plugs, wires, and coil, I'm getting about 23.5 MPG on everyday driving. Of course that's mostly with the AC running, but it can't make that big a difference, can it? Of course it's still a big step up from the 12.5/16 I get with my '93 Dakota. MilesFox
i have seen use of the ac cause a soob to stallat slow speed driving, turning think of all that load as far as fuel economy is concerned automatics suck as this loyale i sold turns the same rpm at 45 mph as my 5spd does at 60 p mph

PopsicleMud
I set the timing to 20º. At least that's what I thought it said. the marks were kind of hard to make out. I still get some pinging when the engine's working hard at freeway speed, ie. at around 70MPH or trying to maintain speed up a steep hill. The plugs, wires, coil and timing did smooth out the idle quite a bit. One thing I wonder about is my gas cap. When I pull into a gas station after a long drive and take off the cap, it sucks in a bunch of air. Shouldn't the cap be letting in air to relieve the vacuum? Does vacuum in the tank make the pumps work harder and lean out the mixture?
PopsicleMud
i'm in the same boat as you dave, i still see pretty bad milage with my 94 5sp loyale Have you tried changing your O2 sensor? I just changed mine on Saturday, then took a trip to Mt. St. Helens. On the first 220 miles, which included the climb to 4000 ft and we used the AC most of the way, I got 26 MPG. On the last 75 miles, which was basically flat and we didn't use the AC, I got 32 MPG.
Alexx
m8 88 sedan 2wd at to 4wd 5spd can go from columbus ohio to chicago illinois, or fort way ne indiana to milwaukee, wisconsin filled to the brim till it clicks and squeeze another dollar in there, i got 457 miles when i ran out of gas. um.... did you have a police escort to closely monitor the traffic when you ran out of gas? Funny coincidence, I once got somewhere between 456-465 miles on my 81 subaru DL wagon on a tank of gas, this was back in the late 80's. Ever since my original clutch was replaced back in late 80's early/90's the mileage on my car dipped from around 33 mpg to 30 mpg. Around that same time, I think California changed the formulation of their gas and I've always wondered if that had something to do with the drop in my miles per gallon, since it seemed to happen ovenight. but which was it, changing the original clutch, or the change in gas formulation? My car, now 24 years old, averages around 25-28 mpg. keep in mind the car was loaded down with most of the stuff i own and on the top as well. meant to run out as i had a 5 gallon can full in the back um, don't try this at home, MilesFox is a trained professional in the art of driving until a car is out of gas. the low wfuel warning lite was good for almost 100 miles I would never trust a car for more than one gallon of gas once the low light comes on, and I would find that to be risky as well, but it is interesting you got that much more from your car.
