Can't find right oil filter

Recommended Posts

I have an '85 GL, 3dr Hatchback, Dual range 4wd, and 1.8l. When I bought this car a year ago it had a proper size filter. Since then I have used the 3682 from Fram, Wal-Mart, STP, etc. It is too big. The application guides say it is correct, but the diameter is a bit too big. I measured with a set of calipers, and the mounting pad on my oil pump is a smaller than the filter. The filter drips because it cannot seal. The outer half of the gasket does not even make contact. The oil pump does not leak. I replaced all the seals on it. It is nice and dry. I compared the first filter I took off to the PH3682 type, and it is noticeable smaller in gasket diameter. That old filter is no longer made, and says it has been replaced by the 3682. I have tried different brands. It is not overtightened or too loose.

Does anyone else have this problem? I need a master catalog to find my filter by size, not what the company says should fit. Anyone have a link to a catalog like this? I had a catalog like this once but it seems to have gone missing. Thanks for your help.

I have a 1361 on it now. The one I took off was a NAPA Gold, but was a different part number. NAPA says it has been replaced by the 1361. It doesn't drip as bad and fits a little better than the Fram. But it is still a smidge big. I measuresd its gasket outer diameter at 2.735" and need one that is 2.67-2.7." I don't think the oil pump was replaced because I am the second owner, and the old man that had it before rarely drove it. This is puzzling to me.

But I guess a drip is better than a pour.

I used the Fram PH2825 (?) on my 1981 GL 2 door hatchback until I sold the car in 1999 (~160K miles), and never had any issues. On the 1987 Brat, I initially used the Fram PH3682 without problems, but then went over to Genuine Nissan filters (# 15208-55Y00). I have two Nissan's that use this filter, so I get 4 to 6 at a time. These are good filters and can be obtained for $5 on-line. I have also used the Purolator PL24457 on my Nissan Altima's and the Brat, on occasion.

I am not saying that you will necessarily have problems using Fram, but I know compared to Wix they are inferior in quality. Why wouldn't you want the best when you buy an oil filter? For the little price difference buck up and buy your car the best filter you can buy!
