EA81 auto to Manual (4spd or 5spd)

 Share

Recommended Posts

I gotta swap this damn subaru from Automatic to Manual. I could do 4spd or since I have to swap anyhow, maybe I'll go 5spd.

I need to know what kinda snags out there i can avoid? Anything to beat or cut before I start?

The one thing that is bugging me right now is the peddle assembly, is it really that hard?

For swappin in a 4 speed:

THe pedal box is a bit of a pain if you have a computer and all that down there, but not hard at all if you dont.

Remember you've got to swap radius rod mounts from the manuual car too.

You will have to enlarge the hole through the floor for the shifter, the sheet metal bracket that holds the shifter boot works well as a template for this.

I read somewhere that you have to swap the drive shaft, but you dont.

Unless you plan on welding in the two peice driveshaft, you will need to lengthen the one peice driveshaft. You might have to grind some off the bellhousing on the engine side to clear the flywheel. I suggest getting Jerry's (Bratsrus1) conversion kit, it makes the swap much easier.

The tranny I think i will use will be a RX tranny. The CV's are taken care of, and from what Ive gathered the tranny bolts to the EA81. But I cant remember if the RX has a tranny crossmember or not.

The car has no O2 sensor, so I dont think it has an ECU. It might as its a '84.

I didnt know the Radius Rod mounts were different. Anyone have a picture of the 2?

I will have the 2 piece driveshaft as well, and will have to find a way to mount it. And the car will have a 3" lift so I think I can get around the hammering, but cutting im fine with :)

Havn't got a pic, but the only difference is in where the transmission crossmember bolts on.

The EA81 has no transmission crossmember tho, do i need to add the one from the RX?

meaning it's missing? (ea81 tranny crossmember?)

Shawn used Jerry's kit which uses the stock ea81 tranny crossmember redrilled to fit the ea82 tranny mounts.
