vintagejoe
I've been told by a mechanic that it is a 2.5 Another one said it's definately a 2.2 Which is it? Is there a place on the car where it's notated?
99obw
98 Legacy L is definately a 2.2, last year of the 2.2 in the Legacy was '99. IIRC if you look down at the block between the alternator and the power steering pump it should say EJ22 rather than EJ25.

Hi Joe, Definitely a 2.2L which, btw, as most people on this board will probably tell you, is a more reliable engine. I have the same car. - Ed
Drakien
Yeah usually with the 97, 98, 99's they have a logo on the trunk that say 2.5GT if it is the 2.5 Yours is a 2.2, if you look at the vin plate under the hood on the driver side of the engine bay by the strut mount, it should say EJ22 or EJ25 on it. I would suggest the 2.2 also, I actually had the 2.5 and am downgrading to the 2.2 for not only better reliability but for gas mileage also. etc
I have the same 98 Legacy L, and mine has 2.2L. I also had 1.8L in Loyale and and a 2.5L in a newer OBW. 2.2L is nearly as nice as 2.5L power wise but without the problems. Supposedly 2.2L will last a long time. jmorton822
It would only be a 2.5 if it was a GT or Outback, unless someone did a swap job. Otherwise, it's a 2.2. Not too much of a noticeable difference in power in my mind. I've had a 96 2.2 wagon and a 98 2.5 sedan.
