ea81 computer question

Recommended Posts

Hi I thought I would see if anyone has done this or if it is even worth doing?I would like to see if anyone has ever reflashed the computers for the ea81 engine(carbureted)? Is there any benefit or should I leave it alone? Don't really know but I wanted to see if there would be a gain on a modified engine?I am contemplating this before I even have the car btw.I wanted to be able to run without a cat and maybe get rid of the O2 sensor.Any other thoughts would be appreciated.:drunk:

I would assume you're not going to run a stock carb on a built motor, so you shouldn't need the computer then. My built up Brat doesn't have one at all.

These "computers" only do one thing, and if working properly, they do it well. Basically, they adjust the mixture based on your O2 sensor to increase effeciency and meet emmisions standards. They dont help performance.

I dont think they have enough control to bring about greater performance.

Try driving the car for a week with it as is, then pull the fuse for the ECM, and drive it for a week that way. See any differences? I know mine ran richer, so it had those bonuses, but I got lousy mileage, and my normal 0.01 carbon monoxide levels went to 1.91.

If you want performance, pull the hitachi and go with something else.

I agree with you McBrat I didn't think that I would be running a computer on something like that.I have a question for you though,Did you go with a higher volume fuel pump when using something larger than the weber 32/36 or 38. Or if I wanted to run dual 32/36 or go with a 4barrel:slobber: . I would also like to know what the flow rate of the 32/36 or 38 is in cfm.Well that is enough thinking about that little screaming engine for now.I think I just shat myself.

no, I'm still using the same aftermarket fuel pump I was using with the weber...

I need to put a weber back on mine for testing purposes to see what the difference would be between the weber and the Holley.

too many variables changed at once.

I just filled up my gas tank, so I'll be able to check mileage with the holley now....

The computers in the Brat's were very very very simple. The average wrist watch has more processing power. They can't be "flashed" there is nothing in there to flash. Basically they are just a big on/off switch. If your going for power, then you should look into either an aftermarket carb, or a fuel injection system.
