habib99
Hi, a veteran of the older generation board, I never thought I'd be here (always thought my newer Legacy would never break down)! I think the ring gear has worked loose from the flywheel! (??if its related but the clutch/gearbox area has been making a squeeking noise on and off for months -the noise would stop sometimes when you pressed the clutch but sometimes it would continue even with the clutch depressed.) Can anyone advise on: 1) Why this might have happened? 2) The best way of getting at the flywheel/clutch for replacement - i.e gearbox out or engine out and any good links to proceedure or a quick step list of what to do. thanks a million for any advise, need to fix this motor up so I can get back to my EA82T project!! ccrinc
Impossible. There is no separate ring gear. The flywheel is one piece, with the "ring gear" cast as part of it. Sounds like a clutch issue only. Much easier to remove the transmission than the engine. Emily http://www.ccrengines.com I think the ring gear has worked loose from the flywheel! habib99
oh- cool, that would be better than replacing a flywheel. but then there must be something wrong with the starter because when I turn the engine over, the starter just whurrs round but doenst turn the crank, if I 'bump' start the engine then it runs but makes a noise like something isnt right in the bell housing. does this enlighten the situation? reddevil
Yo stata is bustido! Two bolts, one easy. the top one, one ***************, the bottom one. Two or three leads. It sometimes is easier to drop it out the bottom.

It sometimes is easier to drop it out the bottom. Sounds better and better every day -if its the starter then I'll be soooo happy! however, why is it making a really bad noise -like a metal rubbing/crunching noise- after the car has been started by pushing it in gear? Could I diagnose by starting the car without the starter in place/look at the starter to tell (once off). thanks again for any more advice
reddevil
Sorry, now with that info you is shiet out of luck. You have a bad starter (easy fix) but also have a bad throwout bearing. The bearing requires dropping the tranny or pulling the motor. Of course the benefit of this is the fact you get to install a new clutch. Everytime this has happened to me, I just rebuild the engine while I am at it.
simbey1982
Some of us arent as good as rebuilding as you Reddevil.....though i should make a DVD on pulling and installing new tranny's
Gnuman
Your throw out (release) berring is going out. As for the starting issue, it could be one of two problems: the starter is bad, ir rhe ring gear cast into the outside of the flywheel is bad (worn, chipped, whatever). You can check the latter when you replace the throw out berring. My recomendation is to buy a good clutch kit and replace all of those parts and surface the flywheel while you are at it. This will save you from having to pull the tranny out again in the near future.

So can anyone recomend a good place to mail order parts? I know I will have to ship to the uk but I find that this is cheaper than buying here. Also ----- assuming from what has been said that it is possible to take out the tranny and the engine will still be secure enough on its mounts to take the flywheel off? thanks to everyone for the guidance, very very usefull to learn from your experience
simbey1982
to get to the flywheel you have to take the entire tranny x member off....getting to flywheel = taking out tranny and yes the engine will be fine on its mounts
