Rear shudder under acceleration...

Recommended Posts

Only really happens if I accelerate from a stop, making a right or left turn (at a light or stop sign etc...) I can feel the rear end shudder alittle until i straighten up and continue to accelerate.

Im almost certain its my LSD binding. Is this something a fluid flush can solve? or does it sound like i'll need to rebuild it? I dont want to pull the diff twice.

Also, I talked to a friend who just converted his LSD and he said he bought standard diff oil that said it had an LSD addative that made it okay. Im wondering if this would be okay or if I should locate some LSD Special Oil. Any suggestions on brands and types are greatly apreciated :)

And I should also add that my rear drivers side CV is completly thrashed, and had a plastic bag zipped tied around the inner joint to replace the missing boot. Ive never had a problem running bare rear CV's, but Ive also never had a AWD tranny like this :)

I have not had the pleasure of running a Subaru LSD, but I have played with a posi-trac diff before (yes they are VERY different), and I can say you MUST add some sort of additive or you will get chatter. I think some members have added simple posi-trac like additives, some gear oil come with additives in them already and say that they can specifically be used in locking rear diffs (I think Mobil 1 75w90 is like that). Anyway, if you have just strait gear oil, that is probably your problem. I doubt that it is critical that you run Subaru OEM lubricant, but it is probably your safest option. You obviously need to run something special.

A rear CV could theoretically cause a problem like that too if there is too much free play or resistance in it - fix it and be done with it, because one of the sides to owning a FT4WD car is that you must take care of all four wheels, because neglecting anything can cause tranny issues.

subaru dealer i talked to said they use a pennzoil synthetic (yellow bottle), they even showed me the bottle. got the same stuff from a parts store but much cheaper than subaru tried to sell it to me for. i added all new fluid when i got it been running that diff for a couple years with no problems, still works great.

Ask Zapar about it; I think he suggests Kendall LSD gearoil. That's what I put into my Brat and I never had any problems with the diff. Unfortunately, it was so long ago that I don't remember anything but the brand.

Yeah i think i will replace the fluid in the LSD and do the rear CV as well. I just so happend to have found a spare Rear CV i had for my lifted Wagon. Problem is, its in my Wagon up at Jibs house. I'll have to remember to get it next time im up there.

In the meantime, im going to start shopping for gearoil.
