seatomidwest
My AT transmission is failing to switch into 4th gear. It is more likely to fail the longer I have been driving (the hotter it is?). If I drive it a long way, it even starts having problems switching into third. I am basically ignorant of my duties as a car owner, and did not have the transmission fluid flushed for a long time. I bought the car 160k, and recently, at 260k, when it started having these problems, I had the transmission flushed. And suddenly everything was better! But not for long. It seems that the new tranny fluid only temporarily alleviated the problem. Am I just going to need a new transmission altogether or does the fact that new fluid made the problem temporarily go away act as any sort of clue that something lesser might be wrong? rottenhead
I'd say you were lucky you got that long out of it. I took good care of mine and it's pretty much beat at 250 (not that that isn't amazing for a Subie auto!). Maybe start looking for a used one. subiedoobydoo
I own a 91 AWD sedan, but I had a binding problem, tranny only had 106k original miles on it, so I replaced with a used one I bought on the net with 55k original miles. If you want these to last and minimize problems and shifting, use Amsoil Synthetic ATF, it works miracles. I also have a 93 AWD wagon with 243k miles and have been using the Amsoil ATF for 4 years, and it shifts as smooth as a babys bottom. I will use nothing else. Also running Amsoil synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in the front and rear differentials. Im also running the synthetic gear oil in my manual tranny on my 94 Wagon, and the shifting is so much smoother than with the conventional oils. Trust me, you wont be dissapointed. Good Luck. 1991 Legacy AWD sedan 1993 Legacy AWD wagon 1994 Legacy AWD wagon 1994 Legacy AWD Turbo Wagon (newest edition)
paulbellefeuille
Amen on the Amsoil! I had an '88 Chevy Beretta with Amsoil ATF fluid and put 260,000+ miles on it before the engine threw a rod.. I was told by the wrecking yard that I got my money's worth.. the tranny was still shifting smooth...up until the engine quit. I have synthetic auto tranny fluid in my 91 Legacy L AWD wagon and have 125,00 miles on it and it's still shifting like new!
