Electrical system, Why......

Recommended Posts

Heres whats going on. When driving down the road, the volts will drop down to about 10 volts, then go back to normal. I have checked the alt and it checks out fine. Had three different places check it out, and they all say its fine. All my connections tht I can see seem fine. Bad ground? After the problem started, I get alot of engine noise through the sterio and my cb. Also, my amp for my cb isn't working correctly all the time, whick also started at the same time that this charging problem started. I have checked the belt, and its tight, and all the connections to the alt are claen and making good contact. Anyone got any I deas?

sounds to me like the brushes in the alternator

are about shot and

doing the intermittent charge routine

I have had this on more that one EA82 alt

(I guess that is what it is no car specifically given)

When they get worn so short they occasionally loose contact

with the slip ring

I've had the same problem Skip described- definitely worth looking into. Also have had grounding problems. Always a good idea to run a couple big beefy ground wires from the bellhousing to the chassis as well.

More cowbell never hurts either.

Could be a voltage regulator... most are internal meaning you might need another alternator.. but before you go doin all that, check the connections at the back of the alternator.. ive had the wire back there get cut about 3/4 of the way through and it caused an irratic charge reading.
