hatchsub
Is it possible to swap in a tranmision from a later model subaru to give me the overdrive in mine. I currently have the 3 speed auto and its a fine transmision until i get on the highway. This is a 2WD car. I don't like the high rpm (even though at 75 mph and at 4000 rpms i was getting 27 mpg). I would like one extra gear. Is this a somewhat easy swap and what car would i look into for such a transmision? Not sure if i would want to convert to manual or not but I'll cross that when i come to it. thanks!
Ross
Your best bet would probably be to swap in a 5 speed manual.

Ross
Any manual 2wd car should be 5 speed. I have no experience with 2wd cars, but doing a similar swap in a 4wd car you need: Pedal box clutch cable flywheel transmission crossmember Crosmember/radius rod mounts center console Have i forgotten anything? I thought that the early 5 speed 2WD's were non overdrive units?
Ross
I think 5th is 0.725, so it is overdrive by quite a bit.
GLCraig
I thought that the early 5 speed 2WD's were non overdrive units? nope, both are 4th and 5th gear are overdrive. 4th is .885:1 and 5th is .725:1. The 5-speed has a 3.7 final drive ratio compaired to the auto's 3.454 final drive. So if the engine is at 4000rpm the 5-speed in 5th will have an output of 1491rpm and the auto will have an output of 1158rpm
hatchsub
Ok thanks. Maybe in the future this car will get a 5 speed swap. I just cant understand why subaru didn't make an overdrive auto for it as well.
Adam N.D.J.
The 5-speed has a 3.7 final drive ratio compaired to the auto's 3.454 final drive. Is that just a 2WD thing? Cause the highest final drive that I'm used to seeing on a Soob is 3.70's.
