Need some Brat help

Hello everyone, new here so be gentle please :)

I am going to go look at a 85 Brat 4x4 and I was wondering if there is anything special I should look out for. Also what's a ballpark figure on what it's worth. I know it has about 80k on it, it has a cap on the back, and some rust in the rear fender wells and bed. I'll know more tomorrow when I go look at it, i'd just like to have some kind of idea as to the worth of Brats these days. I'd also really like to know about the "weak" spots on Brats.

i have never owned a brat but, the value of them is constanly rising. they are startin to get pretty spendy. well if you are knew to the world of subaru, you might want to keep a extra quart of oil with you at all times. lol the engine is a ea81 which should run for ever and a half. well if you get the brat, have fun in it:)

Depends.... if rust is common in your area and the rockers and frame are rustfree, then it may be worth like $4000 or so in your area. If rust is NOT common (such as here in oregon) bed rust drops the value... maybe $1000 for it because of the rust... with rust and more miles... like $500 (say 150K and afew holes)

 

Brat prices are all relative though... supply and demand changes them alot.

 

Rust areas to watch for: Rear wheel wells, front of bed, rear of bed (especially if muffler is missing!) rocker panels, firewall.

Yes... check the frame thoroughly. The body on my original Brat (in the 80's) was perfect, but the frame rusted out. Other common rust areas are the shock towers and floor pan.

 

If it'sbeen sitting, also check the heater ducts... they seem to make a nice home for mice. My newest acquisition had a very cozy 3 story condo in it. It took a bit of time and effort but, I think I have it all out.

 

I see you're in PA. They aren't too common around here, so a good one would be $1800+ considerably more if the interior and paint are good.

When the exhaust pipe falls off the muffler, gases collect under the driver's side rear corner and combine with moisture to form acid which eats out the area around the bumper mounting pretty well; you really have to get under the Brat to check out that area. Besides the area mentioned by Flow, check the rocker panels, doors, and front of the door frames for rust. Price? I've seen two fairly rusty but driveable Brats with much higher mileage than the one you're looking at and they are not selling for the $700 to $800 they are priced at; I just bought a totally rust-free '84 with 115K on it for $2500. I would check with carfax on the one you're looking at to see if the 80K is correct since that's pretty low for that year car.
