belizeanbus
Hi all. I'm beginning my first EA82 overhaul. I have never in my life used an engine hoist, but right now I have one in my driveway and I'm bit perplexed about what comes next. So, the engine is about as dismantled as it could be... all of the injection gear has been removed. It's basically the block, heads, water pump and oil pump. I was looking for a good place to hook the hoist, and for some reason expected there to be something obvious. But I don't see it. The hoist I have to use for this job doesn't have one of those balancing things I've seen at the auto parts store... it just has a chain and a single hook. It seems the hook is not going to grab the engine anywhere. Does one just get some heavy chain and wrap it under the engine, hook it to the hoist and lift? Or is there a method to this, involving proper places to hook into in order to avoid damaging the engine? Thanks belizeanbus
Humble Nuto 53
the motor youre pulling only weighs about 178 pounds... its pretty well balanced motor as far as they go.. i was using a piece of nylon rope about as big around as my finger, passed it from front to back between the oil pan and the exhaust port, pulled it up across where the clutch fork sticks out, back down between the oil pan and the exhaust port, then tied a knot, and hung the two loops on the hook. i think there might be a lift hook on the front of the motor, but i know theres none provided for the back... its not very heavy you can grab it about anywhere you want... yegoshin
I have recently pulled and EA81 complete, I used Nylon rock climbing strap about 1.5 - 2" wide. I would suggest using something like a tiedown strap from home depot, no need for a chain. I would take the strap and pass it under one of the heads then cross over to the other side of the engine and pass under the other head. Then tie loops on both ends and use a carabiner to hook them together. Then hook the plance on top where the strap crosses eachother onto the hook of the hoist. This way the load will be balanced and you will not have to worry about it tilting one way or the other.
Turbone
Any time you use rope, it can stretch. This will make the load unbalanced, not good. You can get a short length of chain, about 16in, form a Hardware Store. Get a couple of bolts and nuts that will fit thru the chain links. On the rear of the engine where the pitch stopper bolts on there is a loop on the mount, attach one end of the chain there. You can use the powersteering bracket on the front of the engine for the other end. You will have to pursuade the the engine off the bellhousing, they are usually stuck together pretty good. I like using a block of wood and a hammer. If the car is a AT, you will need to remove the flexplate bolts thru the starter hole, this can be a little tricky so be patient.
