wounded brat Posted September 2, 2005 Share Posted September 2, 2005 trying to fit a 5 speed into my 86 brat. the 5 speed that i have has 27 splines on the front transaxle. It is also 10 inches shorter than the original 4speed. I know that the tranny came from a turbo car but i am not sure what year. the cv that fits the turbo tranny was to long and the seal ridge? was to big for the brats wheel hub if anyone knows how to id this tranny and the car that it originated from that would be a great help also need to know where to get custom cv made or ordered. MorganM Posted September 2, 2005 Share Posted September 2, 2005 Sounds like the tranny came from an EA82 turbo model. That means its axles are 25spline and it's also longer than your EA81 axle. Life would be much easier for you with a 5MT out of a non-turbo vehicle. Then you'll have the same 23spline all around (so you can reuse your old axles) If you must make it work then it's time for some custom axles. You'll need to take your old EA81 axles and take off the inner DOJs. Then put the DOJs off the EA82t onto your EA81 shaft. However now everytime you need a new axle you'll have to do this. However now everytime you need a new axle you'll have to do this. 27 splines counted them several times also the diameter of the turbo axles was thicker so you just cant switch the DOJs. Surely they have some info on what it came out of. got the tranny myself out of a pick a part in california was new to subaru mechanics so i didnt think to pay attention to what t the car was other than hi lo 5speed turbo lesson learned the hard way i guess. There are no 27 spline old school transmissions. If it is an old school (pre legacy) subaru transmission, it will be either 23 spline( non turbo) or 25 spline (turbo).. Referring to manual trasnmissions only lets say for argument sake that i cant count and it is 25 spline. the turbo axle that i had was a thicker shaft so the inner doj off the turbo would not fit on the old axles. is there a way to change out the outer doj? Maybe the end of the axle shaft is machined down on that phat Turbo axle to fit into the DOJ? Suposidly there is a snap ring holding it on. I've always just... beat it off! We'll get something figured out yes, there is some machining involved. a couple of board members have a turbo tranny in a ea81 based vehicle, and have had to have custom axles made... check here.. I paid $120 a piece for em i want 100 each for em and you can keep your cores I won't need em. Im going to rebuild my transmission and switch the stubs out so I can run standard axles.
