My Subabru

Recommended Posts

I got a 1989 Subaru GL-10 in late March of this year. Since then i've had to replace the two front air struts and put manual switches to make it work. Had to replace flexplate. Put a helicoil in the head. yesterday transmission fluid sparyed all over the road, i just replaced the filter and gasket on the transmission. My brake lights quit working. And other small problems. The car only has about 74,000 miles on it, and was only owned by one person before me.Does anyone else have this much trouble?

Yup.

My tail lights quit. Power steering rack exploded. 3 headbolt holes stripped in the block (found something better than helicoils to fix it though). A whole slew of MAFs. Master cylinder leaked. Tons of other stuff..

I know your car only has 74k, but its still almost 20 years old.. Stuff happens. Thats why the board is here:D

The Air Suspension needs more maintenance than most people are willing to do. There is one guy on the board that can give all the details. So I doubt the original owner maintained the Airbags.

Most of the Experts recommend ditching the Air Struts and replacing w/ conventional.

My 96 Impreza had some mice chew some wires , so I wouldnt rule that out as a possibe cause for the brakelight issue. Might just be old wires. But yes I have many many hours of electrical troubleshooting on an 87 GL-10.

The good news is they are very easy to work on and the 4WD is worth its weight in gold. I always have liked the 87 GL-10. You have a great car. If you really want to hear some car woes then I could talk about my Chevy Truck, but I wont get into that.
