Curious about this AWD thing.

 

From what I understand my 1989 XT6 AWD auto is setup to run

90/10 most of the time, then switch to 60/40 when the front wheels

start slipping.

 

So I'm wondering, is there a sensor or wire or *hack* of some kind that I can

remove, unplug, cut, rig up so that it runs in 60/40 all the time ??

I don't know for sure, but I would think there would have to be a wheel sensor on the front, that feeds to the computer. When the speed of the wheel and speed of the trans don't match, it would know the front is slipping, so apply more power to the rear. I theorize this has to be controlled by the computer, and therefore would require hacking in to the code and making changes. If you cut a sensor, it would probably be 90/10 all the time because that is the default setting. The computer wouldn't get a reading from the sensor, so it wouldn't know what to do. But on the transfer case itself, there would have to be a sensor of sorts. Hmm. I don't know. Anyone else have any ideas?

Is it an Automatic Transmission or a 5speed Manual Transmission? I'm not sure how the ATs work but the 5MTs it's a full time 4WD setup with Driver Operated Differential Lock. With the Diff Lock open the center diff is open and power is applied to the path of least resistance. Then you can lock the center diff and make it 4WD, 50/50 split front and rear. Keep in mind you have open diffs front and rear (unless you have a rear LSD) and you will still have 50% of that power applied to the path of least resistance.

Yes, there is The Duty Solenoid C is the item that needs to be tapped, using a switch of sorts. Here is the link from XT6.net
