Island Roo
dont know anything about turbo motors, are they the same as the reg motors or have different things like pistons or rods or ???. second can a turbo be bolted on a regular motor and how well/ long would it live? thanks. Snowman
The EA82T turbo engine is identical to the naturally aspirated EA82 in many ways, but there are a few key differences. What makes it an EA82T is that it has dished pistons for lower compression, it has different heads with two intake ports instead of one on each head for improved flow, the PCV system is slightly different, and the engine management and fuel system is different. You CAN just put a turbocharger onto a naturally aspirated engine, but the way in which you do it will cause your results to vary. Some examples of how it's done: 1. Turboing a carbed EA82 and keeping the carburetor has not been done by anybody on the board. It would be a nightmare to tune it and it would never run as well as an injected engine. 2. A guy in Canada put a turbo on an SPFI soob engine with the factory engine management. It wasn't running a lot of boost, so reliability and longevity were pretty good. 3. Several people on the board have taken a carbed shortblock with the higher-compression pistons and added the turbo heads, manifold, engine management, etc to create a high-compression turbo engine. This results in substantial power gains over the stock n/a or turbo motor, and has proved to be somewhat reliable. Basically, you can do it, but it won't necessarily be easy or cheap. It might be simpler to just swap in and EA82T, but you can do whatever you want.

Island Roo
thanks Turbone! TROGDOR, i have 2 cars an 85 turbo wagon and a 91 Loyale spfi was thinking of adding a turbo to the spfi, as i have spare turbo parts
Vanislru
Do it! The way to deal with the Differences with the pcv system can be found by searching a bit. An oil catchcan will help. It'll also cost you some new gaskets and minor screwin' around but the low end tq gains will be worth it. Something to consider is fueling, the higher comp will make it alot more prone to detonation but that can be delt with by either a secondary injector coming on at around 5 psi of boost or a RRFPR [rising rate fuel pressure relay] set at slightly higher than stock. And good flowing clean injectors. I'm yanking the SPFI block out of the 91 tomorrow and tearing the intake of for someone so I'll be doing this Soon. Just gotta find a RRFP and see about cleaning some injectors and testing there spray patterns.
Island Roo
i got the 91 front end yanked far enough out to get the rad out from around the engine today and removed the other fender and hood
Island Roo
could you adapt larger injectors? sure it would use more fuel at idle but wouldnt starve @ WOT and might not need to modify engine management, or maybe modify the FPRegs vacc signal
Vanislru
could you adapt larger injectors? sure it would use more fuel at idle but wouldnt starve @ WOT and might not need to modify engine management, or maybe modify the FPRegs vacc signal It's been looked at a number of different ways but by far the easiest way to go about it IMO is the RRFPR and/or another injector with a pressure switch. So if it's not raining do you want to chop what you need from my 91 after I yank the motor? I'm just going to do it outside I can't be botherd to stab axles into the front just to wheel it into the shop.

calebz
Calebz has this setup. You might PM him for more details, or he might respond to this thread I have a carb shortblock with turbo heads and manifold. 02-03 WRX TD04 turbo and intercooler. 2.5 inch stock WRX exhaust from the turbo to the rear diff. No muffler. Sounds nice:D . Running 9-10psi currently and its a lot of fun. Carb'd motor crank pulley..It weighs about 2.5 pouds less than the turbo pulley. Fuel system and management is currently mostly stock. After the first of the year, I intend to install the most recent revision of the MegaSquirt & Spark system and toss the stock ECU and MAF. May do injectors and RRFPR at that time.. But I want to get the stock parts tuned well with the MS&S first. Then I will start making improvements, because I will be able to tune it as I go. I will do my spider install at the same time.. I have one, just been to busy/lazy to install it. Oh yeah, can't forget the WRX wheels, coilovers, Rear LSD and 20mm sway bars. Those helped a bit in the handling area. Made the car a lot more fun to drive
