2005 Subaru Power Steering Went Out...

Recommended Posts

I don't pay very much attention to initial quality ratings, since they're really not a good indicator of how much work the car will need in 5, 10, and 15 years. But I'm sure initial quality problems are very frustrating for people who buy new cars often.

Was it a belt, fluid loss, or something bigger? Is it taking the dealer a week to book you an appointment? I'd like to hear how this ends.

2005 Red Turbo Outback, dosen't even have 4K miles. Dealers has had it for over a week now. Hope this isn't just the begining.

I ocasionally monitor 2 soob forums and a soob usenet group. PS is NOT a known weak point. I don't recall ever hearing about it being a problem. You're just unlucky. My friend's Toyota Highlander blew its PS pump in west Texas - horrible time trying to find a dealership - then he had to wait on a part! sh ! t happens.

good luck

I'll have to double check when I get it back exactly what it was. They weren't very clear. I noticed a couple weeks ago that the steering was stiff as sh$t and it kept getting worse fast so I took it in. The dealer has had it for a week now, I guess they are waiting on parts. Anyway, they gave me a base 06 with the auto and I'm deffinitly missing the turbo stick. God I hope its not a lemon. I'll keep in touch about exactly what it was that went out.

You guys are going to love this. So I get the Subaru back after they replaced the steering box. They called me and told me it was done. I pick it up after five last Friday and leave the keys in the loaner per there request. So It feels like sh$t, like they didn't even do anything. So I call them Sat. morning all and the girl tells me that they are still waiting on some parts (WTF? Seriously) and that it will all be fixed soon. Why even ask for the loaner back? So I get a letter today in the mail telling me that my service is done and thanks for buying from them. On top of that I'm driving it home and the check engine light comes on and the cruise control light is flashing after I fill it up. (Checked the fluids and nothing is low) Anyway, I'm over this BS. What do you guys think, should I take it easy on them tommorrow or should I show them my true feelings? This is my first new car and this crap is ruining the experience. I'm so sick over this. I baby this thing, Mobil 1 since 200 miles, I let the turbo spool down, let it warm up before hitting the turbo. GRRRRRrrr.......

Go in, ask for the owner, and if he is unavailable, the general manager and UNLOAD on them ... take your documentation and demand an explanation. If they shine you on, invite them to drive your car, and demand (on the spot) an SOA Field Rep!

Now, you know why we call them stealerships (and/or idiots).

Happened to be at a Subie dealership the other day and chatted a fellow who was getting a loaner as his 05 OB had blown a PS pump. Sh** happens to at least one other and only time will tell how many others. P.S. my wife drives a 05 OB as well and I beginning to feel left out!

I think it would be perfectly understandable to let them know how disappointed you are. Its OK to be emotional - just don't threaten anyone or get vulgar. Try to go through the conversation in you head a few times, try to think of all their responses. Be prepared for -"They all do that" at which point your response should be one of 2 staements; "Then they are all broken and need to be repaired and you can start with mine!" or "Give me the keys to THAT one - you wanna ride a long?"

also, I've gotten better service by using a phrase like "How would feel if you were in my postion?" or "If you were me, what would your next step be?"

Also, be prepared to go up 3 levels in management, and let them know you'll be happy to camp out in the boss's office until he shows up. Don't be afraid to ask for the owner/manager to resolve your problem - that's one of their main functions! Big problems! Sometimes it's good to go right before lunchtime or quitting time. DO NOT threaten to sue. Most folks who threaten legal action never carry it out and other folks know it. If you feel you need to, calmly ask for a legal contact number or say "I really don't think we need to involve a 3rd party for this problem, do you?"

I think the new cars all have variable assist stering, maybe some speed sensor or something is telling you car it's at highway speed all the time and it is stuck on minimum assist.

I dunno
