Do It Sidewayz
is it going to hold?? I know we all hear of people saying Subaru trannies are like glass. well i'm thinking about putting a JDM EJ20T into my RX for ice racing season. The engine is in a Legacy Turbo, and runs. I'd like to use the RX tranny so i don't have to piss around with tranny mounts and drive shafts. But..is the RX tranny likely to hold 250-260 hp?? MorganM
It could but it won't under the stress you're going to be putting it through for ice racing. Hopefully you'll place before it looses too many gears
Do It Sidewayz
alright...so how much work is it to use the EJ tranny?? i'm guessing driveshafts, and a custom tranny mount. Along with the master cylinder needed for the clutch.
simbey1982
You can swap in the stuff from a cable assembly to any EJ tranny...i took the clutch fork and stuff from an old 91 and put it on a 2002 RS tranny and the cable works great. Though if you get a transmission from a turbo EJ series they are diffrent and will need hydraulic. Yeah im not sure how the old stuff mounts up so you would need custom mounts and such...the transmission might be physically larger too Also check the Retrofitting forum for the EJ swap you may have to do Axels and the whole shebang if you need any tips PM me
JWX
I'd say try it. you put these trannys side by side they look mostly the same. as long as you don't abuse it it should take fine.
torxxx
Ice racing is as hard on a tranny as racing on dirt/gravel/pavement would be. Even when you downshift and lock up all 4 tires, it doesnt take anything for your tires to slide. I think it'll be fine. Use synthetic oil in the tranny
Snowman
I'm running a 92 legacy tranny behind my EJ22 conversion right now, and it was WAYY less work than making the EA tranny fit the engine. Get an early model that has the cable activated clutch (sorry I don't know when they switched, but I can tell you that my 96 Legacy has a cable activated clutch). The transmission mount was a piece of cake to weld up. I mocked up the tranny in the car with the engine bolted down, tacked the EJ mounts on my crossmembers, then removed the whole assembly and welded it together. You will have to run EA82T front axles to mate up with the legacy tranny. For my wagon, I had the forward section of the EJ driveshaft shortened one inch, which may be a little bit too much as far as strength - the splines don't go ALL the way into the tranny. You'll also have to get the EJ rear diff that matches the ratio in the tranny.
Do It Sidewayz
so the EA82T front axles will slide right onto the Ej tranny?? And all that really needs to happen is shorten the prop shaft?? I was thinking that i'd have to replace the front axles and rear driveshaft. If it's not that big of a deal..i'll use the EJ tranny forsure. Especially since the tranny i'll be using is a Legacy Turbo tranny, which has the hardened gear set. archemitis
i only have 150 hp stock, pushing it through a ea 4 speed. beating the hell out of it every chance i get, on the road mostly lately. circle burnouts, clutch drops, shifting through thre gears spining the rear (1) tire. i havent had any problems grinding off gears. but iceracing... dont those always loose 3rd, honda toyota subaru, whatever you got, i think your gonna break trannies. i guess they look the same inside, same width gears, same materials(presumably). id try it. ballitch
this discussion always sems to pop back up every now and then, bottom line is, if you treat your tranny like crap, it will take a crap, all you have to do is wait that two tenths of a second, or half second, for the tranny to synch the gears and slowly pour on the throttle, its sounds easy, but we all know how we get when we're excited. ~Josh~
Do It Sidewayz
I completely agree with how you treat the tranny is how it's going to treat you. But...there is a point where the gears and shafts and everything inside the tranny cannot physically withstand the torque produced. I suppose certain WJM was making close to the same power/torque levels with his 1.8L motor...and his tranny held up just fine. However, or what it's worth. if it is a relatively easy swap...Shortening the prop shaft is no problem, if the front driveshafts slip on, and just fabbing up a mount...that really is not all that difficult, and might be worth the little bit of extra work. Surely you will spend the same amount of time mucking with that as you would fabricating an adapter plate...so it's probably a toss up
JWX
also he beats the living crap out of his trannys, 6k clutch drops with teh ceter diff locked, he shifts so fast its like a blur, etc, etc and his trannys feel fine.
Do It Sidewayz
Interesting..he was making what...240-250 torque at the crank??
