85 turbo wagon hard start

Recommended Posts

hi just picked up an 85 ea82T turbo wagon (thanks Trevor), starts fine cold, and starts fine warm if shut off and started right away, but if it sits a while you have to hold the throttle all the way down and crank excessively and it will smell of fuel and then start up rough and rough all through the rpms and smooth out after a short period, whatcha think?coolant sensor?

  • 4 weeks later...

today had a code 33 so changed the coolant sensor on the rear x over near pass head, code gone but still bagged under load ratlles a bit and slight backfiring until i let run a bit rolling under light throttle then it smoothes out and runs good, now it starts and idles good, had a spare MAF so i tried it, didnt help.

whats the other sensor on top of the therm housing?

whats the other sensor on top of the therm housing?

That would be the auxiliary air valve - it is responsible for the high idle when the engine is cold - i beilieve the wires are actually attached to a small heating element that the computer can control, not a sensor. The computer is then able to lower the idle point before the coolant is fully heated.

You said that it now starts and idles well, does that mean the problem is fixed, or does it still play up?

gonna try new plugs and different disty the vac adv. feels shot , but if it was it should be crappy all the time

I was very impressed with it when I saw you out driving the other night.

youre one to talk ive seen your shenanigans with Dan last week too.

cant wait to lift and wheel, i think im gonna bend stuff!

I had the same with my 1986 turbo , after I cleaned (was competely seized and dirty) the PCV valve , now starts fine at every temperature.

i will check, now it starts good and runs ok but if i try to drive away after starting it will buck and back fire, if i let off to idle for a couple seconds it will take off, then get to end of block and the idle is surging then drive back down the block and its all good, so its something during warm up

Did you check the vac advance on the disty Mark? I'm going to be working on Rianna's car all day so if you want to borrow some parts to swap drop by. What sor of vac is the car running at idle druing warm up? It'll drop with the rpm's when it does sputter but if it drops BEFORE then that might be something to look into.

put a vac guage on it, it sputters as vac drops but not before, i found a vac leak, it was the egr solenoid so i plugged it, will see if it changes tomorrow, but the vac advance isnt working. there is something on pass strut says cruise pump, anyone know what it is? and vacuum routing?

this may be a dumb Q but this car was A/T and now 5 spd, does this car have a kickdown solenoid and timer and thermoswitch?(read in manual, fuse 12) where are these components and would this affect the engine rpms and timing etc, today the ecm light was flashing erraically with no pattern at all, bad ground?

doesnt want to go past 55mph and when it does a red light goes on under the speed reading(digidash)

today looked for and replaced any vac leaks, re checked timing, replaced the duct from the MAF to turbo, tried another PCM(flashes erratic whike running) different coil, all made no difference, lastly as revving up i heard a snap sound, it was the EGR, unplugged it and will see how it behaves tomorrow morning, maybe its over EGRing and causing a misfire due to to much inert gases(exhaust)

are the vacuum advances the same between turbo and non turbo distys?
Why? I think they are the same. The prob you have isn't vac advance related I don't think. Time to try stabbing it with 1 of my disties?

I checked the shaft on that turbo when I had it out so it's not that. I'm thinking TPS out of adj [maybe why there's no code?], I'd check the pos. as per manual, and at the same time pull of the top intake piece and check the throttle mech. on the op. side of the TPS.

checked the TPS, its pretty basic.i cleaned all the injector connections incase they were temp sensative, i noticed tonite when its missing the left side of digidash goes out, i plugged a connector under the dash together, white plug in w/ 2 black wires. grounds perhaps? will retest tomorrow AM when cold

so i plugged in a 2 wire plug last nite and now it runs wicked, has some VERY light surge @ 4500rpm but it doesnt bag out at all, th dash hasnt flickered and i can get past 55mph, when i got it i thought it was a diag plug but guess not. just waiting for AA lift to show up, said 10 days by mail, been 10 business days as of toady

Probly the fuel pump mybe get another 5 years out of it. I've had 2 turbo wagon's where the surging got unbearable and the new pump's that I installed pepped them up. I want to install a high press. in a safer location at some point on the offroader.
