NA Engine Swap

Recommended Posts

Anyone done a swap to an NA engine for their RX? If so, what are the options? From what I know I could go w/ the 2.5RS powerplant, but I'm not sure about all the wiring. It's highly doubtful that anything would match up.

nice, thats EXACTLY what implanning to do. 1989 RX wanting to swap in a 2001 2.5rs ej25 NA engine in. Im also looking at how to do the wiring and all. let me know if u find anything and ill do the same. good luck if u end up doing it. i suggest a cobb cold air intake the stromung exhaust system, thats what ill be doin later after smog and itll add a bit more push

If you're going to go to the trouble of swapping in the engine, ECM, and wiring harness, as well as adapting the tranny, I would put in a better engine than the EJ25. If you want a good n/a motor, go with the 90-94 EJ22 (biggest advantage is it's a non-interference engine). If you want more power, swap in an EJ20G from a WRX. Neither of those engines have the head gasket problems that the EJ25 is plagued by.

The swap is a big project, but it's really not that hard.

I'll look into the EJ22 as well. I'm not looking for that much power. I think driveability is more important. To be honest, I like the way stock RX's perform; the limit is approachable and predictable, which I find to be very important towards the enjoyment of a car.

My motive behind the swap is to get a reliable performance boost with strong aftermarket support. That said, the WRX motor would probably be the best pick, but I like the linear acceleration of an NA engine.

I'll see if I can find any donor cars in the area without breaking the bank.

im the same with you. plus i would be getting the na ej25 from a friend. also ej22 seems a bit low in the performance area, esp. when i can use my friends cold air intake and stromung setup. i was wondering if theres any way to strengthen the head gaskets for the ej25? wrx motors are just too pricey for me
