shaner
Hi all, First, thanks for the wealth of knowledge this forum has been for me. I just purchased my first subie, an 02 Outback 4cyl AT about 3 months ago. I do love it so. Here is my issue. when accelerating normaly every thing sounds perfect. When I floor it however the engine developes a loud sqeal/whine/howl. Almost as if a belt is slipping. I figured I would post here first before heading to the dealership and breaking out the wallet. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Shane
WoodsWagon
I wouldn't go to the dealership first off. That's big money and basic diagnosis could be done by a local shop for cheaper. Does the engine have to be under load, i.e. moving the car to make the squeal or can you reproduce it by revving it hard in Park? If you can, open the hood and listen while you pull on the throttle cable or a friend runs the pedal. Watch out for fans/moving bits and see if you can pinpoint the sound. 75subie
my uncles forester has a loud pitched whisle under hard acceleration, but it sounds kinda cool, and doesn`t really hurt anything, so he hasn`t done anything about it in 3 yrs.
Setright
Engine off. Check for loose belts and have a closer look for cracks.
shaner
Engine off. Check for loose belts and have a closer look for cracks. Cracks where? in the belts, or somewhere else. Thanks Shane Changed the oil for the first time last night... Muuuuch easier than my old civic. So nice having the filter on the bottom istead of halfway up the back of the engine. Also, is there a difference between the noise based on whether the A/C or defroster is on? maybe the a/c clutch bearing is going bad. just some guesses
shaner
I checked the airbox, and it was sealed well. However the intake tube in general is very loose at most of the joints. Also a .5 diamiter hole has been drilled in the rear of the main flatter part of the intake that is behind the grill. Does anyone else have this hole? I wonder if air is getting sucked in at a loose point at certian rpm's. Time to play with some hose clamps. Thoughts?

If you mean drilled as in not original, I'd try putting some tape over it and see if the noise goes away. It could be a normal hole for water drainage or something if its factory original. I dunno. shaner
the edges seem to ragged for it to be factory...
