I live in Colorado and I am planning to run a kayaking trip to north east Mexico. For this trip I will be towing a mid size dirt bike, moto trailer and some gear with my(here is the funny part) 91 LOYALE. This road trip is about 30 hrs road time one way with the loaded rig. I would like to ask you Subaru experts what you think about this or if anyone has had experiance towing mid sized loads with a LOYALE. My car is a 91 1.8Lt it has 120k and has never given me a problem EVER. Newer timing chain, water pump and alternator. What problems might I encounter besides the Mexican water???

Is it a 5 speed or automatic? If auto, I'd worry about carrying that big of a load, especially if it's hot outside. If 5-speed, just take it easy and you'll be fine.

 

I haven't towed anything for that sort of distance before, but I have towed skiffs as well as one-place snowmachine trailers behind my subaru for up to 150 miles at a time. If it can handle a 500 pound sled plus a trailer, I doubt you'll have trouble towing a bike.

if it's an automatic just get a tranny oil cooler from parts of africa for like $40 and you will sleep a lot easier at night

I Towed With My Gl10 Auto 3 Speed Front Drive, A Brat On A Tow Dolly 150 Miles Or So With About A 70mph Average With No Problems. Id Go For It.

I've towed an 81 wagon on a dolly with my 83. No problems at all. These little guys can grunt pretty good when you need them to. As Snowman pointed out, if the car has an auto, you might be a bit leary. Then again, maybe you want to install a trans cooler and switch over to synthetic ATF. If you've got a 5-speed, that's a bit easier. No cooler needed, but you'll want to go easy on it.

 

As far as problems to be expected, well...there's the normal range of problems associated with a car this age on a road trip that long. Change the oil, both engine and transmission, flush and refill your cooling system. Make sure your alternator is putting out properly. I'd carry along a "mechanics tool set" and add a breaker bar and 36mm socket. I'd bring along at least one axle and a pair of timing belts.

I would go for it just don't race and take it easy, if you have a 5spd make sure your clutch is properly adjusted so it won't start slipping on you.
