torxxx
Alright guys, I'm starting to get into EJ22's at work now. Popped my newer generation cherry this week at work. My questions are: 1. Ej22's dont have a led light on the ecu that spits codes does it? If not, what OBD thing do I need to get codes off it? 2. What are the years are far as the wiring harness's go? I pulled a motor from a 90 legacy wagon yesterday and put it in a 92 legacy sedan and I had to change the intakes and a few other things to get the wiring harness's to line up. I'm assuming 89-91 and then 92-94 are the differences in years? 3. As for the dual cooling fans, is one of them supposed to come on when I start the car? or are they both thermo sensor'd? thanks in advance for some answers... jamal
I can answer one. Yes, the CEL will give codes. The info on how to do it is on Legacy777's site, and I'm thinking he could probably answer the rest of your questions, too. They use ODB1, and a subaru select monitor, or this deal, might be of some help. 92 was the first year for the "facelift," but the mechanical aspect mostly stayed the same. Setright
Fan is are thermostatically controlled. The other is controlled by the aircon compressor.

Under the kick panel on the driver's side you will find two single pole connector sets. One is green, and the other black. The black one puts the ECU in diagnostic mode. Connect these and turn the ignition on, and read the code from the CEL on the dashboard. Long flashes are tens and short ones are 1's. In 92 the connectors for the on-engine wiring harness were changed from the ols style of three connectors to the new style with two. Also in this year, they changed from the grey injectors to the red ones. Not sure on the specifics on how they differ. . in 95 they moved all the connectors to the right rear of the engine and put all of the connections that are behind the TB into them, so you only have to disconnect these to have all of the wires from the engine disconnected. In 97 they also went to solid adjustable lifters, dropping the hydraulic lash adjusters, and making all of the engines interference type, (89-96 were non-interference) The fans act as stated abobe, and are controlled by the ECU (IIRC) based on coolant temp taken at the crossover pipe. You will find two coolant temp senders there to the right of the throttle body (if looking from the drivers seat). The one with two wires is for the ECU, and the single wire one is for the instrument cluster. . . Hope this helps with your questions.
northguy
Pick me out a pretty one (with low miles and no oil leaks), please.
Snowman
If it helps.... My engine is from an 89, and the ECM/wiring harness from a 92 mated right up with no troubles whatsoever. I think the compatibility is pretty good over the years.
torxxx
hmmm thats weird.. I wonder if the motor that was in the 89 wagon was a newer motor? Its hard to tell if the motor in the car is the original engine cuz so many people blow up motors here in fairbanks.
Legacy777
The 90-91 Legacies & 92-94 legacies do have some differences. The electrical harness between the two are different. As you noticed, the 92 engine harness won't plug into the 90-91. There are a few other things here and there, but for the most part things are pretty similar. Do check out the legacycentral bbs. A lot of good info on there.
northguy
Hey Brad, any luck on locating a good motor and all of the goodies for a swap in my Brat? I'd love to do this over Christmas break if it's possible. I'm sure I could get Kelly to lend a hand.

I got all my parts from Canada, so maybe they used the same connectors and everything on the Canuck cars throughout those years but changed it in the US. Maybe its the metric electricty vs. the english electricity (damn that guy looks evil) There may be some polution controls that are in the US cars that arent in the candain models, henc some differnces. nipper

(Sorry, old joke in the auto-diesel department at UAA:rolleyes: .)
