HELP new noise i cant find

Recommended Posts

This is in my 83 4wd wagon 4 sp. Ok i've got a new noise i dont like this one. Started on the freeway in traffic this moring. When im in gear above 2500 rpms or so and let off the gas all the way i get a clunk clunk noise. It'll happen too if im riding a long at a good rpm and push the cluch in real quick. I've been under the car and made sure all my lift bolts are good and tight. The axles seem fine, no slop and no noise when turing. Nothing seems loose. I check the front diff/ tranny oil and it was 3/4 full with bubbles in it. Are bubbles bad, im going to change the fuild tonight but am looking for guesses for where the clunks from. I know its hard with out hearing it first hand but im just looking for a plase to start. The noise is a rather low clunk clunk and then nothing untill i make it do it again.

Thanks for any and all help

David

Bubbles in the gear lube is normal. All of those gears tend to whip it up pretty good. More so if it's low, like yours was.

I'd check things like tranny mount, engine mounts, maybe even the pitch stopper for the source of the noise. Could be a few other things, but I'd start there.

check the ol radius rods and the rubber mounts on the steering rack... these clunk around when you get opn and off the power if theyre worn or loose

especialy if its a manual steering rack, I have the same noise and after checking tie rod inys & outys and CV joints and ball joints, it turns out the problem, in my case is internal to the steering rack,,, wich I noticed got worse after installing the 4" lift and larger tires.

I had just that problem in an 84 GL Wagon and for me it was a loose bolt in the tranny crossmember. It was HORRIBLE! reverberated through the frame and you could feel it in the floor. I thought ************ was hitting the fan.....

My hatch does this.

I replaced the tranny mounts which were shot and I tightened down the engine mounts one was scary loose. I checked the radius arms and all the lift blocks none of which were loose. The noise went away.... but its back and Im thinking its got to be internal.(rechecked all of the above) my reasoning for thinking this is...

I can't make the noise by jumping or rocking the car while underneath it, so its got to be internal somehow......( I have even considered a strut or strut mount?)

I never notice the noise while in 4 wheel drive I should go check, just to see.

The throw out bearing is an interesting thought I have no idea how that could be so, I guess its time to do some research.

On the plus side I have put thousands of miles on with that noise being there, and nothing has broken yet..........

oh yea whats this about rubber steering mounts I havent checked those!
