Phizinza
Hey everyone! I got anyother wreck today of a 82 wagon (I got a wrecked 83 wagon the other week) The gearbox in the 82 is sweet, feels much better then every other old subie gearbox I have felt. And after adjusting the tappets the engine runs these commpressions: 1cyl 168PSI, 2cyl 162PSI, 3cyl 160PSI, 4cyl 162PSI. So then engine seems good. I can't test the power of it because the clutch is to far gone . It doesn't blow blue out the back too . Unlike the 83 wreck, which blows a lot of blue . Anyway, I was testing the 4WD and found that I could only get 2WD and 4WD, no low range. I pulled apart the center console and found someone had striped the thred on the lever and welded it together (in what looks like the wrong place) . So, I am wondering, did they make a single range 4sp box for the EA81. Also, are these commpresions good? The 83 is running like this: 1cyl 90PSI, 2cyl 70PSI, 3cyl 70PSI, 4cyl 70PSI, so its not so good. Thanks for any imput fellow subie drivers. mcbrat
yes, the ea81 in early DL 4WDs had single range 4WD. not sure if all ea81 DL's had single range though.... Phizinza
The dash has a 4WD LO light, and when you move the selector into what drives like 4WD HI the LO light comes on (so there is a LO switch on the gearbox?) When you select 2WD it shows 4WD light (no LO light). Is there anyway I can look at the gearbox and see if its a low range one? Is it low range just because theres a switch thats wired upto the dash. Is there anything on the gearbox I can use to determain if its D/R? Thanks. Also, do these gearboxes get stuck so you can't push it into low range sometimes? I've had my brat one stuck in 4WD and can go between HI and LO but not 2WD, I just push real hard on the lever while the engine is running with the clutch in and it fixes it. Sweet82
I'd bet your 82 has low range. I'd also bet that your tranny is locked or messed. If you could get the car running, I'd bet that it may unlock itself. Maybe pushing it forward to reverse and forcing the tranny to turn a bit? Ross
If it has low range (i'd also bet it does) the selector shaft off the 4wd lever will attach to two seperate levers on the gearbox - one for engaging 4wd and one for hi/low range.

It's quite possible this car originally had dual range hence had the hi/lo lights on the dash and has since had a new gearbox put in which is only single range. that could explain the confusion of the lights. Yeah, thats what I was worried about. The car drives, but I can only move the 4WD lever between two positions, what seem like 2WD and 4WD HI. But the dash lights say 4WD and 4WD LO. I'm confused. But I look at the two lever thing when I get the car in the carport and start disconnecting stuff off the engine and gearbox.
Phizinza
Its a replacment S/R gearbox It doesn't have the deul range part on the box. Thats why it might of been welded at the lever in a odd place. Its said because the gearbox was smooth as, and the lever wasn't floppy on it. Ohwell, just makes it a easier job putting the engine in my Brat as I dont have to put the gear box in too.. I really wanted that gearbox in my Brat too. Maybe I can sell it to someone. SubiStu
my 80 GL 1600 has the 4 speed tranny and it only had a single range transfer case.
Phizinza
they were still putting the 1600's in subies in the 80's? Interesting. I have decided EA81's are crap, I want a EJ.. (the story to that one is too long to go into)
