4EAT R & 2nd only? (Toasted)What next?

Recommended Posts

I have a 91 Legacy AWD Auto that isn't working properly. Checked the Haynes manual, shifter adjustment (Which appears to be fine.) and band adjustment is all that they cover. Read lots of post here but found none with the same symptoms. As there is only one band it must still be working for the 2 gears to work that I have. My symptoms are not in the list of options they offer. Recomend dearler, which is not an option as far as I'm concerned.

If it can be fixed inexpensively I would like to do so my self. Other wise it will be a donor for my EJ22>EA81 conversion.

? Could the valve body be gmmed up and causing these symptoms?

? Is it possible for the ECM for the auto tranny to cause these symptoms?

Open to suggestion on possible solutions. Thanks, Stumpy

If i remeber correctly from my transmission classes reverse and 2nd gear work off each other. It sounds like you lost your tranny, and will soon loose those too.

Is your fluid burnt? Did this happen all of a sudden? Can you manually shift?

Just bought the car and haven't had time to investigate to far. D, 3 and 2 give the same response. Starts out in second and thats as far as it goes. Drop it into 1 and it locks up! It will move if you give it enough gas but acts like the break is on. Rolling at a few MPH and dropped into 1 and it stopped like I hit the break. Crusing along at 40MPH and tried out all top 3 gears no change except for when I went from 2 up. RPM dropped and acted like it wanted to shift or coast but then caught 2nd right back to where I was before.

Previous owner had been driving it around town for the past 14 months in this state. Motor runs great and I aquired it for my EA81 lift project but thought if it was some simple or inexpensive fix I might consider fixing and turning over as the rest of the car is in decent condition.

Will get back to you after I have had a chance to check it out a little further.

Thanks, Stumpy

No garage so I've been slow getting things checked out. Put up an awning yesteday so I would be out of the rain at least. Didn't rain here today, go figure.

Yes, oil level is fine.

Yes, the oil is burnt.

Won't get a chance to drop pan until I finish the timing belt I'm working on, my first EA82 project.

The tranny is toast.:dead: Cost of stock replacement is HI.:( What about the cost of transfering to manual? Would it be worth the investment just to sell it? Or better of sending it to parts land? Thanks Stumpy

Sounds well toasted. You could put the EJ engine in the old EA81 car. Or, I think someone else suggested putting a regular 5spd from another legacy, or an old 5spd dual range from a EA82 in.

I have one NA,d/r5speed and another on the way, not sure if its from a NA or turbo model. The Legacy only has 162K on the clock with a couple minor blems on the body and other wise very nice condition.

Besides the tranny I will need an adapter plate (Unless I find a Legacy 5 speed) different axles, differential and interior parts upgrade. And lets not forget having the flywheel welded and redrilled, a new clutch package and the clutch/brake pedal assembly. Am I overlooking any thing?

I paid $375 for the car as is. After buying all those extra part will I come out ahead after selling the car?

I doubt it, especially if you count your labor. I thought you wanted it to use yourself. Most people who buy old subaru's just want a cheap old car and don't even know what the difference between a subaru and a toyota and a chevy cavalier is (except for nuts like us who might actually want a dual range legacy and know exactly why we'd want it too...) And most of us would rather do it ourselves than buy one that someone has already modded. In my experience.

On the other hand, $375 is a pretty good price for a EJ22 engine in good condition....

Have you considered dropping in another auto tranny? Get one from your local auto recyclers and swap it. Can't be more than a dedicated afternoon's worth of work. Hey, the subi rally team mechanics can do it in 11 minutes. It would be the easy way to go, and assuming its AWD, it would make the car verry marketable for the impending winter.

Thanks all, for all the input. And yes zyewdall the price is less than I could have purchased a EJ22 out right. Wasn't thinking but I have most of the manual parts for conversion in my parts car I'm trying to dump. Will have to check on a good stock Legacy AWD 5 speed before my final decision. Could be less $ and work as opposed to a d/r set up. Stumpy
