Need parts for 78 Brat

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 78 Brat (cheap) and it ran great for about 1,000 miles. It then began losing power, and a compression check showed 90 psi in No. 2 cylinder, 120 psi in 1,3 & 4. Oil inserted in the plug hole brought the pressure up to 120 psi. I removed the engine, an EA71, 1600 cc with dual carbs., and the left head and no. 2 piston, but can't see anything obviously wrong with it. I thought I would replace the cylinder sleeve and rings, but cannot locate sleeves for it. Has anyone been through this and found parts sources? The Brat was getting about 27 mpg but has a lot of rust so I don't want to spend a lot of money on it. Thanks for any advice. Trailrider.

Does the sleeve show signs of wear? All the suby engines I've taken apart you can still see the original cross hatching on the cylinder walls at 200k miles. If so, a ring job may be all you need.

Thanks "Z" and Jerry. There are no visible cross hatch patterns on cyls. 2 & 4, and piston nos. have been peened into the tops, so I guess the 92,xxx miles is way off. Is the 120 psi a decent reading for the EA-71 or should it be a lot higher? Thanks again.
