I just need to know what years each vehicle was sold in, and if you happen to know which engine came in which car and stuff like that, it would be helpful too. Also, which year was the first for 4wd? SakoTGrimes Posted November 15, 2005 Share Posted November 15, 2005 Subaru 360 - 1958-1969, rear mounted, RWD 356cc 2 stroke air cooled 2 cylinder, availible in standard bubble car form, Custom (wagon), Sambar (van or truck) and sportier Young S and Young SS versions... replaced by the R2, which as far as I can tell was pretty much the same thing, only less popular... replaced by the Rex in 1972, RWD, rear mounted 356cc 4 stroke water cooled 2 cylinder, increased to 665cc in 1982. Became front wheel drive in 1981 and replaced with the Vivio in 1992. Not sure when they started making normal size cars, but I read that Japanese companies were using Subaru wagons as utility vehicles by 1971 and then the idea came to some dude that if they made them 4WD they could have a chance in America, which happened in 1975. Some modifications to the 360 line and Rabbit scooter line until 1968; 450cc engine available on 360 1968: FF1 sedan introduced in Asia, Australia, NZ 1969: 360 introduced to the US; FF1 wagon and 4-door sedan (previously 2-door only) introduced 1970: FF1 range arrives Stateside 1971: FF1 available with 100cc-larger 1100 engine. FF1 also first Subaru to use "Quadrizontal" horizontally opposed engine. 1972: Rex replaces 360; Leone begins to supersede FF1. FF1 still has 1000cc and 1100cc engine options. Leone available with 1100cc engine in Asia; only 1300cc engine available in States. Body styles include 2- and 4- door sedans, coupe, and wagon. All Subaru station wagons to date including Sambar van and 360 custom have had a split tailgate. Sambar now based on Rex platform. 1973: Leone engine displacement in US grows to 1400cc. Last year for choke on dashboard, first year for emissions equipment. 4-speed manual is the only transmission offered. AM radio optional on most models. Then as now, Subaru's primary supplier is Clarion. Last year for "solid" vinyl upholstery on non-coupe models (later years have basketweave) and split tailgate station wagons. Rex continues in Japan and is introduced in European markets. Subaru never offers another microcar in the States. 1974: No major changes from '73 apart from colors, midyear introduction of performance Leone with dual carburetors and midyear change to single-port exhaust. Head gaskets strengthened. 1975: First model year for 4WD wagons and all that they entailed. No more cowcatcher bumpers on these models as they are classified as light trucks/utility vans. Air conditioning is now available from the factory as well as dealers; numerous aftermarket suppliers now making appearance and performance accessories; popular dealer add-ons include vent louvers for rear windows on Coupes; aftermarket cassette and 8-Trak players; and wooden shifter knobs. 1976: Subaru's first Ski Wagons debut; 1600cc EA71 engine debuts at the end of the year. Stage II dash introduced. Cloth seats an option for the first time. 1977: More options become popular. 1400cc engine phased out. 1978: First year for the BRAT. By now Subaru is the best-selling import station wagon in the US. 1979: Last year for Gen 1 wagons, sedans and coupes. FFE is the most economical Subie. GF hardtop will be phased out and not replaced until 1982 when GLF coupe/hardtop is finally equipped with comparable equipment. Finally automatic transmissions (introduced in 1975) account for more than 25% of Subaru sales. 1980: New 1800cc engine available only with automatic. Coupe, 2- and 4-door sedans, hardtop, hatchback and wagon body styles offered. New US Ski Team Wagon debuts. Automatic transmission upgraded to handle power from 1800cc engine; will be offered with 4WD within a year on foreign markets (1983 in US). Most Subies are now being sold with cloth upholstery; power steering is now available; and most manual transmission wagons are 4WDs.
