replacing water pump, what else?

I have an 86 GL Wagon, Carbed. The engine that's in it is one that I took from a friends wrecked 87 Hatch. The she had the engine replaced about 10,000 miles previously with a rebuilt, I didn't get any specifics on it, but It looks to be in amazing shape, unbelievably clean and it runs great.

 

The only thing I noticed wrong with the engine was some deposits arround the water pump. Now I'm slowly leaking coolent, and I figure thats the problem. Well, to make a long story short, I'm going to go in and replace the water pump this weekend and I want to know what else you guys think I should replace. The hitch is that it's my only car and so once I start taking things apart I can't run to the auto parts store until it's running again so I would like to know what is likely to need replacing, if something doesn't need replacing than that's cool I can return it when I'm done.

 

I almost forgot, when I first got the engine into my car it was doing some of the Tick Of Death but it seamed to get over that after I had driven it about 100 miles? if that changes anything now you know.

Zen,

Normally when I change out a part, I try to look at what other components are related to it. In this case, since you have to take certain things off and drain the cooling system to get the water pump off, I would replace the items that could only be replaced when the system is drained as well. E.g.; the thermostat and gasket, heater hoses, etc. Obvisoulsy you'd only replace the hoses if they are worn or deteriated, but I consider a t-stat and gasket as a standard replacement part anytime a pump is changed. It might also be a good time to back flush the system, and replace the radiator cap too. Maybe the drive belt? So maybe a list like:

 

Pump and gasket

Thermostat and gasket

Extra hose clamps (just in case..)

A tube of RTV (if you use it....)

Antifreeze

Radiator cap

Drive belt

Wire brush (to clean pump mounting bolts.....if you don't have one)

water pump, replace the oil pump, main seal, cam seal, belts, anything associtaed with the belts like a tensioner) any rubber hoses that are there (you know the annoying tiny ones that only decide to leak after you put it all back together).

Depending upon the age of the car, i would also consider replacing the radiator, then all would be golden for a long time. Inspect the raditor on the outside and check to make sure all the fins are truly attached to the raidiator. Its hard to inspect the inside of the raditor, but a replacement can be had for 100 new or less used. Well raditor depending on how much you like th car. But if you do all that you should be good for at least 60K
