Scooby Coupe
I have been reading with great interest the recent discussions of the GL10 and Gen1 and Gen2 Subarus. The discussions lead me to a question: is the Loyale considered Gen3? The Loyale seems much larger than my 1982 GL, which I think is a Gen2. I would like to thank all of you for your insight about these vehicles. It has helped me a lot in making decisions about parts and repairs for my twenty-one year old station wagon! P.S. would my WRX be considered Gen X? Gen Y? Oh well... Thanks again! Dave Wood
MilesFox
the gen 1 is referring to the 70's models. or often called ea71's. your car would be in the gen 2 range, 80-84 wagons, sedans, and 80-89 hatchback and brats. the what would be a gen 3 as you put it would be the 85-94 ea82 cars. but they started calling them loyale in 90 when the legacy came out. all of these have the ea series motor, and the legacy and newer have ej motors
TheSubaruJunkie
Miles... the Loyale line is part of the EA82 series and would be considered Gen3. We really dont call it Gen3 though, most cases we use the engine code to classify the model genre. EA71=Gen1, EA81=Gen2, EA82=Gen3. EA71's have the Gen1 Body style, skinny and old looking. EA81's have the Gen2 body style from 1980 to 1984, and EA82's have the newer Loyale type boxy body style. -Brian

dlrallyx'r
Sounds to me like he's favoring the gen 2 style (not that i blame him, ) but to each his own eh? Mike
TheSubaruJunkie
I miss-read the original post. Miles was right, your '82 is a Gen2. I thought you had a Loyale you were reffering to as being Gen2. I do favor the Gen2's... actually, i favor the Gen1's overall, but cant get them anymore. -Brian
Adam N.D.J.
Hey Brian, you can still get Gen 1's. I just passed a Gen 1 Brat the other day with a 500$ for sale sign in the window. Looked really clean from what I saw of it, and it had the jump seats still. Or are jes talking that you can't get them in Cali anymore? I can see that as a possiblity. dlrallyx'r
Gen 1 are a good looking old school rig, look mean, but I am and will always be a fan of the gen 2 stuff, problem is, here in New Hampshire, I havent seen a ea71 in years, and ea81's you cant even find in jyards anymore, the rust just takes them away. mike
TheSubaruJunkie
I guess I shouldnt say they're not available. I have a guy who has a very sweet '78 4WD Wagon for sale for $300, needs CV and radiator... and I have a guy with a very sweet '76 4WD Wagon that needs a new EA71, $200. My 1st sube was a Gen1, i'll always have a spot in my heart for them. Would love to have a Gen1 Brat tho -Brian

WagonsOnly
Why did the engine designation go from EK to EA to EJ? And what was the designation on the Justy and the FF1?
MilesFox
that's what i said, but i gorgot to say ea81 for gen 2. oops the justy has a geo metro motor, and its sideways. Suzuki said "Hey Subaru! Design us a 4wd platform for our suzukis" and Subaru said "Sure we will, but we get the marketing rights and sell them as soobs!"

WagonsOnly
A Metro motor? The Justy had a 1.2L 3-cylinder. The Swift/Sprint/Metro had a 1.0 liter Three or a 1.3L four. So did Subaru get a bored-out Metro motor or did they put in their own? And why wasn't there a 4-cyl Justy?
MilesFox
soob just designed the driveline, probably based off something already suzuki. justy's re suzukies. just like old dodge minivans had mitsubishis under the hood, and thre geo prism is a toyota, and the chevy/geo spectrum in an isizu i-mark, and the geo tracker is a suzuki sidekick, and the geo storm is some sort of suzuki known as a pontiac elsewhere one of them odd breeds
