moosens
Weather permitting I'll be drilling out the broken upper bolt that goes into the axle housing on an EA82 car. What size bolt is that? And the thread pitch too, please. Just had an idea.Maybe I'll remove the whole housing and take it to work where I can drill it out easier. Also I can then apply heat and penetrant, hoping it turns out instead of having to drill it out completely. That is a sleeved bolt, right?I'm pretty sure there's no threads where it contacts the ball joint. As I recall they're threaded only about 3/4 of an inch, sound right? Any locals with a spare bolt or housing? Weather is about to turn sucky. But I really need this car back on the road by Monday. Thanks for any help. ShawnW
I believe is an M10 x 1.25 and youre right its threaded only at the end and sleeved thru the rest. The MOOG brand ball joints sold at many parts stores come with a new bolt when you buy the ball joint if I remember correctly. Its right around 2" long overall length and should be a grade 10 bolt. I believe what I used one time was a rotary cutter and I cut thru the gap in the hub to get the ball joint out and get the front half of the bolt out and then I came thru the other side with a LH drill bit and pulled it back out the backside. Its been a while since I did that. Oh the memories of living in Iowa salt country.

THanks Shawn,I thought some of them came with the bolt. But I bought quick at Auto Zone and settled for the one cheapy they had in stock.I think I'll hunt down the Moog and take the cheapy back. Should be fun.The weather is quickly turning "New England winter".Snow for T'day....and me lying on the ground working on a wagon.I might go balls out and take the whole axle housing off. Then go inside and work comfortably for a short while. markjs
I tried to drill out one of those things the other day.....NOT going to happen for me! The damn bolt was so hard taht a titanium bit simply chewed a nasty hole in the steering knucke and did nothing to free me of the stuck bolt piece. moosens
I won't have much easier of a time,I'm sure.I'll have to get some heat on the axle housing and squirt some PB Blaster in there.Wait, soak again.Wait, heat, and try to turn it with the "easy" out. Thanks guys. moosens
Well I took the axle housing off after a struggle with the LBJ not wanting to exit the control arm. Then I drilled the bolt through using pilot drills as assistants. Finally bored a nearly 1/4 in. hole straight through.Had the PB Blaster soaking.Went to use the turn out bit and yup,it snapped. I'm taking a mental break and eating lunch right now. I don't have my propane torch handy but I'll probably go buy one. I happened to have my helicoil set handy and the tap that matches the LBJ upper bolt is M8 x 1.25,requires 21/64 drill for tapping.
idosubaru
i feel your pain moosens.....easy outs suck, i never use them anymore. you didn't say it, but i'm guessing that's what snapped? i've had one hanging from a rusted fuel pump bracket bolt for two years, that's right. still hanging there, can't get the @*#$*#$# thing out. those things are so useless. i think maybe they work on the plastic trim piece rivets....on a good day. good luck troubleshooting that. cap86
Not sure which car you're dealing with, but I have spare parts & bolts for 86-7 GL wagon here in PA.
moosens
Thanks guys. It's an '89 GL touring wagon. Well I drilled out with the 21/64 drill but you gotta know I sure didn't hit it square so there's probably going to be an issue there. If need be I'll go next oversize and nut and bolt it.I ran out of daylight.Just got the bearings out,LBJ is still inserted but I'm sure it'll come out in the morning.....I hope.I opened the split up with my chisel, got it soaking with PB. Just one of those jobs that feels like it's taking way too long....mostly because it is! My sister inlaw is playing a ripping show right now on the radio/internet. http://www.wpkn.org/ Listen here: http://www.wpkn.org/ontheair.html She's on 'till 10PM tonight ONLY Rock 'n roll of the purest form.Garage, punk, rockabilly, power pop....from Iggy to Jello and beyond.
