Accessing Clarion 116 in Forester

Recommended Posts

Greetings Gents.

I just bought myself XM Radio to put into my 2000 Forester S (2.5l 4cyl).

I've been able to run the XM antenna nicely, but it's the connection into the radio that I'm still working on. It has a built in FM transmitter, but living in Fairfield County, CT I am finding that there is a lot of interference.

I have the option of using the cassette adapter, but I'm looking for something a bit neater.

Anyone know if I can add an AUX line to the Clarion 116 that is standard in the Forester?

Alternatively there is the option of adding an adapter that goes into the back, in between the incoming antenna feed and the back of the radio, so that when I run the FM transmitter it commandeers the feed totally with no interference.

Anyone know how to get to the back of the radio? I can see an access panel anywhere, and I can't see any screws or latches to pull out the radio. What should I be looking for?

I can answer a couple of your questions:

Get a separate FM modulator, it'll put out a stronger signal and combat a lot of the interference. My WRX has a manual antenna, so I just keep it retracted. Who needs terrestrial radio? :)

I'm fairly certain that your factory radio does not have any auxiliary inputs.

I'd suggest checking out xm411.com or xmfan.com for a lot of useful installation tips and info.

As far as taking your dash apart, subaruparts.com has all kinds of install guides available, the one for the subwoofer should have instructions for getting the HU out.

I can't remember if the 2000 forester is the same as the 01 impreza or not. Anyway I've got Sirius in my 01 Impreza, I live in DC so there is quite a bit of interference but the antena for the radio is right above the driverside window, I usualy jsut reach out and lower it. Every so often i listen to the radio for baseball games and I just have to reach out and put it back up. I'll post a pic of how I have mine set up tonight if you like but its pretty easy to get a good professional looking instal in these cars.

My Forester has an antenna that's mounted into the rear left side window, actually attached to the glass. I guess I should just follow that wire along and find where it goes into the back. Or just unplug it like you suggested.

Maybe I'll get the digital camera out and show you guys what I'm dealing with. I'm sensing this site is a good place to post excessivley detailed pictures of a Subaru ;)

When i removed the radio in my 99 Forester I started by removing the console. i am not sure this is the easiest way but it worked for me. If you open it there are a few screws there. then i removed the ashtray and cup holder and I seem to recall some screws facing up. then the face plate pops out with a butter knofe.

What are you referring to as the console? I want to make sure I'm looking to open up the right thing.
