Hey folks.

As a new Subaru owner, currently I own a 83 1300DL Sadan, Im thinking of buying another Suby, most likelly a Legacy. I have some questions troubling me, I really apriciate your answers...

- Are there any problems in particular to look for in a 90'-92' model Legacy, like transmition, engine, AC?

- Im curious about changes between Legacy model 92' to model 90'? Are they significan enough to be worth almost 1.5 more than a 90'?

- The models I have in mind have the standart(At least this is the case in Israel), 1600cc engine. Is there a reason to spend money on different Legacy with 1800cc engine? Or alternativly, after perchusing the 1.6 cars, to swap the engine for the 1.8 or 2.2?

- I heard that the Legacy features bad gas millage and the engines tend to burn oil. Is there any truth in these stories?

Again thanks for this Sites admins and members for having such a great site.

Best regards,

Daniel Tourchin.

Basically all the 90-94 are the same, 94/93 some models got airbags but otherwise mechanical same.

We only have the 2.2 motors here in the states, and this is arguably the best motor Subaru has ever made.

I have had two 2.2 Subarus and both AWD wagons with 5spd have gotten me 30+ mpg highway.

The 2.2 has a tendency to leak from cam/crank/oil pump seals but this is easily fixed, and is not such a problem like it was on the 1.8 motors.

Yeah I'd agree the first gen 90-94 legacies were some of the best built cars subaru made. As for differences between the 90 & 92 model years.....and is it worth the extra cost.....probably not. In the states, about the only I'd prefer on the 92-94 model years is the headlights. But overseas should have gotten the better headlights on the 90-91 MY's.

If you're looking for specifics on the first gen legacies, you can check out www.bbs.legacycentral.org Tons of info there.

The 91s and 92s got the external transmission filter retrofit for the automatics. It's a bit bigger than the fuel filter and mounted on the drivers side in close proximity to the valve cover. I would definitely pass on a 91 or 92 that didn't have this modification. If you search by my logon name you'll find a picture of it that I posted a few weeks ago.

Daniel, make sure you check the gearbox for noise. If there is loud rumbling/grinding at idle, that goes away when you press the clutch down, the gearbox bearings are dead.

Those bearings are the main weakness on those models.

Some noise is normal, but anything that is more than a "hummm" is bad.
