ninjaben43
i have a 92 loyale, it only has 140k on it.sometimes it smokes so heavily i cannot see sometimes verry thick blue to almost a brown hue. there is a pinging coming from the engine that sounds like some extra loud detonation. i think my front main or oil pump may be not sealed so well because i drip id say like 10 or more drops of oil when i shut it off. it looks like it is coming from behind the timing belt covers. i popped the drivers side cover when i put my lift on and it looked dry inside. my oil pressure is good and high when im warming it up but 10 minutes or so later it sits at 25 to 30 psi and at idle it hardly registers. it runs great, still has full power except when i give it too much gas, somehow putting all this oil thru the engine then it seems like i lose one cylinder. the exhaust sounds like i lose one too. i pulled out the spark plugs this morning and there wasnt a trace of oil on any of them, yet there was white carbon on them telling me the engine is running too hot, and my temp never gets above a quarter. this is my daily driver and i need it to last my at least 2 more months until i can get my wife another subie so i can drive hers while mine is getting the 2.2 conversion. i only want to do the bare minimum because i already have the 2.2 but i an not fully prepared to do the swap. any suggestions? ninjaben 92 loyale lifted 15 in. pugs custom everything., 84 gl wagon stock (too pretty to touch), 97 2.5gt sedan roomates with mtnman38 3 brats, 2 91 legacys
Subarian
If the smoke is coming out of the engine bay, it's probably coming from oil leaking out of the pump (they have that habit) or maybe the crank seal or a cam seal. I'd look at the pump first. The good news is that the parts to reseal it are cheap, and you will probably find it brings your oil pressure up, too. The bad news is that you have to remove the timing belts to reseal it. If the oil is coming out the tailpipe, it's going to be valve guides or piston rings. Do you know which cylinder is quitting on you? You can check by pulling the plug wires one at a time while it's idling. You should notice a difference in how the engine runs. When you pull one and there's no difference, that's your dead cylinder. Just be careful not to ground yourself and get too close to the spark. NorthWet
The PCV system is another thing to check. If it is not functioning properly you could be sucking oil into the intake. Ingested oil will make the engine detonate vigorously. Is the smoke while driving in a straight line, or during/after a hard or prolonged right turn? Cougar
I agree with NorthWet. Change out the PCV valve. Check the air filter also for oil in it.
ninjaben43
ok first of all, its coming out of the tailpipe. to the point that noone on the road can see, like when a head gastket goes and coolant is being pumped into a cylindar. so lets see, i found alot of oil in the valve cover breather lines, the pcv valve line, and in the intake. it looks like oil gets past my heads, into the valve covers, up the breather lines, into the intake, and then gets run thru all of the cylendars evenly, witch would answer why none of my plugs are fouled out. i checed my oil, and i have burned over 2.5 quarts in less than 2 days, and about 150 miles. and no it does it in a straight line as well as turning, the pcv valve till worked with all the oil in it but i cleaned it anyways. here is the thing, the car runs great, no smoke no pinging, nothing thru 3 gears, but when its in fourth at cruising speed 55-60 (now that the lift and the pugs are on) for 3-4 minutres or so, the ************ hits the fan for 10 seconds, then goes away for at least 10 minutes. Cougar
Yep. Change out the PCV valve.
Subarian
Also make sure that your PCV line is properly vented. It needs to have a vent somewhere in the atmospheric pressure side of the intake, before the carb or throttle body and before the turbo, if you have one. nkx
where do you guys recommend getting a pcv valve? go to the dealer for an oem replacement, or is a regular parts store replacement part good enough?
hooziewhatsit
part # 11810AA000 from the dealer. They call it an 'air control valve' I believe... If you ask for the PCV valve, you'll get the plastic T instead. Cost me $9. Going to put it my friends car today that's been drinking/burning oil like crazy.
