Rockers seem loose after assembly???

Recommended Posts

I got my Delta cams installed but the rocker arms seem way too loose. I can't pull them out by hand but I can sure move them around a lot. Looks like it's gunna make some serious noise.

Any thoughts? Will the oil pressure hold them where they need to be or did they over cut the base circle of my cams?

If the HLA (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) have collapsed, which can happen when an ea82 is taken apart, then the rockers will be loose until the HLAs pump up on engine restart..This took me about 12 Minutes @ 1300-2500 rpm until they were fully pumped up using a freshly rebuild oil pump..your results may be different, especially with the delta cam, but good luck on the build

I can move them about 1/16" by hand and they all seem to act the same. They have been soaking in oil since I took them out of the engine.

Are they supposed to contact the bottom of their bores and the rocker at the same time? Mine sure don't! It looks a little weird.

Actually, that sounds about right. There's 2 ways of pre-lubing your engine before you start it. Doing so should pump them up, and is good for the bearings also.

1- Use a 1/2" drill motor and spin the oil pump, this is providing you don't have the T-belts on yet.

2- Leave spark plugs out, and spin engine using starter. Best to not have fuel pump wired/powered at this time.
