TurboXT
Now in the right forum!!! After some probs with my head on the EA81, it made me think about dropping a decently powered engine into the brat. I am going to get a head for the EA81 for now, but Kingbobdole keeps trying to get me to fuel inject it, and I just don't see a point to injecting the EA81, so I am looking into dropping either an EA82T, EJ22, or a 2.5 RS into it. I figure if I do it, I may as well do it right. I am leaning twards the EJ22 or the 2.5RS, so I was wondering what I need to do the swap. Most likley it's gonna be the EJ22. I know I need the adapter plate, my flywheel drilled, engine, ECU, wiring (I think I got that covered), and the fuel pump. What else? Do I need the engine crossmember from the engine that I drop into it, or will the EA81 work? Thanks Rick
Jerry DeMoss
Cool Rick. Its just too bad you are having troubles with your ea81.There are plenty of ej22's to be had at the JY's.I hope we can find you a good low miler.Let me know what you decide. NoahDL88
Use the crossmember thats in the car. the holes need to be drilled out about half an inch towards the outboard, making them longer, not wider. The radiator hoses are fun, i used some 1 1/4 inch pipe to make an adapter.
Tbird Man
Also this could be a good time to simplify things and get a latermodel tranny, the EA81 tranny will be stressed with a EJ22 or EJ25. I am looking into an EJ25 in my 'preza, obviously you will need the ECU and harness, which makes a JY pull the best option, also the EJ25 came in the 2.5RS, the forester XT, and all legacy OBs. Edit: I believe the 2.5 also came in the legacy GT.
TurboXT
Hmmm.....I kinda wanted to keep my 4 speed, and see how long it lasts. They had turbo EA81's, and I am not sure but I am guessing they put out around 95HP, and I think the EJ22 is 130HP, so there is only that 35HP diference.........that and I think my tranny has been re-built recently. I guess it depends on how hard I am on the car, and how strong my tranny is.....I could always put a 5 speed dual range in it too if it eats up the 4 speed. I am mainly worried about the wiring at this point. Thanks Rick
MSSLGECKO
I have the same thing going on over here w/ my Brat. My EA81 is struggling and I may have sourced an EJ22. I plan to run the 4SPD D/R into the ground (in RWD for summers:brow: ) then start thinking about a D/R RX FT4WD box in the Brat. As far as comparing the tranny's ability to stand up to ~135HP, the EA81T was sold with the 3SPD Auto 4WD transmission in the US and never came in a manual transmission. My EA81T works great w/ my 5SPD D/R and I think my 4SPD D/R could handle it for sure. Oh and if it helps, I'm scared of wiring too.
Jerry DeMoss
Just swap a n/a ej22 for the T when KBD isn't looking. Just kidding. I will keep my eyes peeled for good motors.
Urabus-84HBDR
so what would be needed for an ea81 into a '78 gen 1 brat? I know that the brat has the ea71 with top mount starter, the ea81 is side mounted, so if I can come up with a tranny (4 speed d/r) will it drop right in? I have a motor alreday... out of my hatch:) Yeah its gonna be fun. the ea71 has a bad head or something... head gasket my guess, but I want the power of the 81 but with d/r. thank you all this site is home for me, besides the mtn... monstaru
pretty much iirc.i am pretty sure you will have some fab work to do on the tranny crossmember...but nothing to serious.i wanna help! so what would be needed for an ea81 into a '78 gen 1 brat? Urabus-84HBDR
yea, I have access to a wagon, it is newer, not sure of the of the compatibility between trans mount. but if im putting in the ea81 trans member in, wont it fit right in, or is there linkage issues.. totally,I am going to make this swap. I get the brat in about a week or two! It is pretty decent considering the price, lots of extra parts with it. I have another delima now. The 86 wagon suffered a good/bad (depends how you look at it) blow to the frontgrill, it was ugly. I will have pics soon and more of an idea on when this is going to happen. we will have to meet up sometime this week? I had my 83 wagon for sale but has become the daily driver... probably seen it around town it has two chrome rims in the back and two white spoked rims up front pretty rusted! later on thanx for the support Ill need a hand...
