MSSLGECKO
My '84 Brat is now struggling bad (possibly as a result of cold weather) The issue is surging in the 2.5-3.5 rpm range and it won't rev. up past that in gear when the problem occurs. I shut down the engine and then fire it up and it runs ok for a little bit then does the same thing; sometimes it dies on its own. Should I just rebuild my carb? How hard is it and how expensive is a rebuild kit? Thanks,
robaru
I have never rebuilt a carb from a ea81, but have done a couple for my ea82's. Seems like a rebuild kit goes for 30 some bucks if I remember right. It is abit time consuming to do it right. If you don't have a mannual, make drawings as you take it apart so everything goes back in the same place. Throw a sheet over your work bench so no dirt gets into the carb as you reassemble it. Use lots of carb cleaner and compressed air in all the passages and jets also. And of course rule out all the possible easier fixes: fuel filter, plugged pcv valve, failing disty. This also assumes that a simple tune up: cap, plugs, rotor, wires, didn't fix the problem.
MSSLGECKO
Actually, I think this is the last straw - I'm gonna slap an EJ22 in and be done w/ it Thanks for the input, I definately need a tune-up but I've been trying to avoid putting $ down on this EA81, so I guess the root of the problem must be my neglect. kayakertom
Almost sounds like a clogged fuel filter, have you changed that lately? MSSLGECKO
I have been thinking it could be the fuel filter so that's where I'm going to start. Should I replace both filters or just one of them? If one, which one? Thanks,
