scrap487
hey I'm just curious, I was changing out the axle shafts on my soob this morning, and I noticed that spare tire rim is 15"... I think its 5" wide.. has anyone tried swampers on these to see how well they work? I was gonna redrill my hubs and get some toyota rims but if the spare tire rim works, it would be a lot cheaper just to find 3 or 4 more spare rims. also is it possible for these rims to work w/ the back side out if rubbing in the wheel well is a huge problem? I havent seen too much about this, and I figure if it worked good that it'd be pretty common/popular on the board, tho I havent seen anything against it either... but I've been thinking quite alot about my bigger tire options and it almost seems like it could be too good to be true. Snowman
It's been done, but I don't think it's safe. Those rims are not very heavy duty, and are not designed for the load or speed that they would be operating at.
scrap487
hmm... I dont know, I know the spare tire isnt all that much to talk about, but the rim seems just as beefy as the stock wheels...
Qman
It's been done. They are not designed for continued use(temporary spare!) A guy I know did it and they were crap. Always bending and were very narrow. Feel free to prove us wrong though. Also good luck finding someone who will mount them. The guy I know worked in a shop and mounted his own. Scott in Bellingham
the spare 15 rim is made of thinner material , also it has no bead ridge that helps lock the tire onto the rim
NoahDL88
you can cut corners with a stereo, but don't cut corners when it comes to important things like wheels. The price of a set of pug wheels shouldn't be too bad, and if the difference in price between the spare rims and the pug rims is too much, then you won't have the money for tires either eh? scrap487
yeah, I'll ditch the spare idea, if its not safe I'm not gonna do it, i've already learned my lesson doing that stuff on my last car, ends up being more expensive in the end. trying the best way to make everything work RIGHT for less than $1200... need brake work, 4" lift, some good tough mud tires + rims, and probably some other stuff I dont know about, and hopefully have a little bit of lunch money left over.
