Looking for some advise

Well guys I am thinking of building a 4wd buggy to play in, and using an extra EA82 engine I have laying around. My first consideration is what trans can I bolt up to this? (Besides the stock stuff) Maybe a Jeep trans and transfer case? Anybody got a good link for adapters?

Also since it is an older carbed motor, where could I find some performance parts for it? Not looking for huge amounts of power, something around 150 hp or more.

those are some tall orders...

first off... i've never heard of somebody using a jeep trans or anything... best bet would be to use the stock stuff... and if you really want to, add a nissan transfer case...

as for power... 150hp is a tall order for a carbed ea82... a lot of the guys running MPFI and turbo getting those kinda #'s... with still more mods...

so besides completely build up the engine and stuff... your gonna have to settle for less...

i know its not exactly what your looking for... but its a start...

Good luck!

I feel your pain wanting to use the engine you have, but if you build a complete custom rock buggy, it may be worth it to get a 2.2 or even a 2.5 motor and mate that to a T-5 transmission, i'm sure Kennedy might be able to get that to work for you.

My plan, once i win the lottery, was to get a 3.0 H6, mate it to a T-5 and a 4:1 T case, with some nice C-303 Portal axles. but thats just me. :drunk:

I have a carbed EA 82 with a Weber 32/36. I think you could get 150 HP if you used two of them. Seriously, though, there aren't a lot of performance mods you can make to the carbed motor to get power out of it. You can advance the timing a little, put on the Weber, add cold air induction, but it's still not going to get you to 100 HP. Since there aren't really any aftermarket internals for the EA 82 (I know the aircraft engine guys might disagree with this, but I've searched), you're pretty much stuck with a nice engine that won't complain if you abuse it, will last forever, but gets you there when it gets you there.

I've heard of guys using a chevy powerglide trans behind a Soob motor, with a custom adapter and mods to the trans bellhousing and starter, but that's a lot of custom work. I'll try to do some research and find blueprints of the bellhousings. I have a friend with cnc mills who could make an adapter, I just need to do the homework.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fry The Car your talking about was a Rock Crawler, and He did a 2.2 first then a Turbo 2.5 I believe...?

Does really well at Competitions with it.....And yes he married it to a Chevy trans and I think Allison Custom t-cases......:)

Here is What I found to be the best So far In al my Rides I've Built...

2.2 motor and AWD auto I locked the rear output clutch so it was running at 100% to a Nissan T-case....Out of this I ran subi Rear difs, but a person could run solid axles just the same and If you are building it Full custom from the Ground it is what I would do...

I ran this set up with 4:11 gears and 32" tires on the Rubicon trip with no issues ....Till I hit a rock the wrong way....:o

Have fun......John

100-150hp should be reasonably easy to attain. Even out of a carbed block!

There are aftermarket sources for these engines. Some of the stuff has to be modified some to make it work though. Delta Engineering makes camshafts for all the Subaru engines. Torque and higher HP grinds. Weber carbs as well. Other's have used fuel systems from other vehicles and such. Check around in the retro forum.

The nice thing about Subarus is that the engineers usually use some parts from a previous model. This means things like pistons from another engine with higher compression will work in your block. The heads can be ported and polished to aid some. Fuel and exhaust work will need to be done to ensure that you utilize the mods that you try. It has to take more air in and be able to let it out again.

You will find that it is easier to get the power you are looking for from an EJ block.

So when people say you can get higher performance out of your Subaru remember that there is always a way to do anything.

BTW, I have an idea what I am talking about. I have built two performance EA81's and a couple of XT6's(ER27). And personally know a few guys who have gotten a lot more out of the EA82 than anyone thought possible. Do your research and you will find the answers.
