blownbimer
Just did a search on the board, but didnt find anything. Im trying to figure out how to ID 3rd gen turbo heads,as I have heard these are the best heads to have, because they dont crack as easy. I know of a couple of 89's in a few yards, so I figure they would be a good place to start looking. I just wana make sure I ID them right first... MilesFox
gen 1 heads will have EA82 stamped on it gen 2 heads will have a line under EA82 gen 3 heads will have a box around EA82 89 and up models will have them, but older models could have them as replacements as well
Subieguy
I don't know about not cracking them. I had a 89 GL-10 wagon I got from a guy and he had cracked the gen 3 heads on it BAD!!! I ended up replacing them with gen 2 heads and no problems. I honestly think it has a lot with how you actually take care of your engine. Abuse it, epecially a EA-82T motor and you are asking for trouble. Take good care of it and it will last a long time. But if you do change the heads make sure you use genuine Subaru head gaskets. Best quality for your Subie.
Subarian
The difference is in the thickness of the casting around the exhaust ports. The later heads are less likely to crack, but as Subieguy said, the only way to be sure is to inspect them.
blownbimer
cool, so I will check the heads I know of tomarow. I should be looking for hairline cracks around the exhaust valve seat on the head from what im reading? not just a split between the intake/ exhaust valve? Dont worry, I already ordered all my gaskets and they are SUBARU, so I wont have to worry about them. Already read up on that one.
Subarian
My heads were cracked between the valve seats. I think it was a gen II head. The car was a 87 or 88.
